The Yank scores his first goal in English football, converting a tricky shot on the rebound after Stoke debutante Arnautovic’s volley struck the post.

He still had a fair bit to do from the edge of the penalty area, and did very well to keep the ball down.

A stunning start to the season for Aaron Ramsey continues with this, his seventh goal in eight matches.

It was gifted to him by Stoke keeper Asimir Begovic, who should do so much better than to parry Mesut Ozil’s tame free kick straight back out into the path of onrushing attackers.

Two free kicks, two goals. Baines is surely the best player from a dead ball in the Premier League.

Note how he goes for a different corner the second time. The goalkeeper doesn’t even see it coming.

Fourteen of these passes were in the final third of the pitch, and thirteen of those were successful. The attacking prowess of Baines, his skill at linking up with the winger in front of him, was on full display.

Well that was a fun few minutes for West Ham’s midfielder. He was booked just after the hour for a poor tackle, but became the hero when he put his team 2-1 ahead ten minutes later.

Just five minutes after that things took a nosedive. He committed a professional foul on Everton’s Ross Barkley, bringing him down from behind to stop him bearing down on goal. It was his second bookable offence and he saw a red card.

He might have ended the match a hero stil… If Everton didn’t score twice after he was sent off to win the match 3-2. Oops.

Liverpool lose for the first time this season. They started the match looking much weaker than they have done lately. Because of various injuries, Liverpool played a defensive line of four centre backs, and without Phillipe Coutinho pulling the strings in the midfield they lacked bite in the final third.

Their best chances fell to Steven Gerrard, who saw two excellent free kicks saved by Arthur Boruc. After conceding they only looked more rustled, and a series of defensive substitutions by Brendan Rogers only disorganised the team further.

Liverpool will be hoping the return of Luis Suarez from his 10 match ban next week will coincide with a return to form.

Inevitable, wasn’t it? The man who left Sunderland on transfer deadline day 2013 to join West Brom for £6.5m scores on his debut against his former club. Paolo Di Canio sold the Benin attacking midfielder because, according to him, he was “finished”.

he left, not because he is a bad guy but, in my opinion, his time was finished at Sunderland because he was not capable anymore to give his best.

Being arrested for drink driving on a night in which Sunderland had rested him for a league cup tie proved the final straw in Sessegnon and his old manager’s relationship:

It means you don’t care,“ Di Canio said. "It means you don’t care nothing about the club so your time is gone. It was the opportunity to say for everybody, and espcially for him: ‘OK, time to go.
