Fulham 1-2 Tottenham 2013/14 Week 14 Highlights by Barclays Premier League

This was a riveting match between two teams who haven’t played riveting football lately. New Fulham coach Rene Mullensteen drilled his team well and let them play with more confidence. After taking the lead, they continued to hassle Spurs and almost equalised with the last action of the match, Kasami striking the post.

Spurs dug in though, and should have scored three or four over the course of the match. Jermain Defoe, Paulinho and Erik Lamela each missed eminently scorable chances, with Defoe’s in particular being wasteful. They may have sold Gareth Bale, but Spurs still like to score thirty-yard screamers…

Arsenal 2-0 Southampton 2013/14 Week 12 Highlights by Barclays Premier League

Arsenal stretch their lead at the top of the table to four points and put a dent in the good form of overachievers Southampton, who were third coming into the day’s fixtures. Both sides play cute and fluid attacking football, so it’s a shame this match ended up being decided by a freak goalkeeper error and a rather soft penalty call.

This is the start of a very tough run of games for Southampton, who play Manchester City and Chelsea in the coming weeks. If they harbour serious top-of-the-table ambitions, they have to start taking points or else risk being left behind.

Hull City 0-1 Crystal Palace 2013/14 Week 12 Highlights by Barclays Premier League

Crystal Palace record a well-earned victory, only their second of the season, away against a Hull City team that’s only conceded once before today so far.

It wasn’t a match of stunning quality, but new Palace manager Tony Pulis thrives in those kinds of scrappy environments. He faces a huge job in trying to pull them out of the relegation zone, but it’s a canny appointment by the Palace board and he’ll stand them in good stead for the months going forward.

Everton 3-3 Liverpool 2013/14 Week 12 Highlights by Barclays Premier League

This was a brilliant and open Merseyside Derby that saw all six goals come directly or indirectly from a set-piece. Neither team had complete control of possession and chances over the 90 minutes, but Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet can be proud of his performance when his side were 2-1 down. He made several instinctive stops that kept the visitors in the fight and eventually allowed them to snatch a point.

It isn’t enough to take Liverpool top of the Premier League, but the pride saved by avoiding a loss away to your bitter rivals more than makes up for it.

Sunderland 1-0 Man City 2013/14 Week 11 Highlights by Barclays Premier League

A massive victory for new Sunderland boss Gus Poyet, but bad loss for Manuel Pelligrini. City have been brilliant at home but woeful on the road under their latest manager, winning just two of their last nine away matches.

With teams in the top six dropping points this weekend, City could have used this as a good launchpad to recover their confidence away from the Eithad Stadium.

Hooper (pen) 54' 2013/14 Week 11 Highlights by Barclays Premier League

Striker Gary Hooper, signed from Scottish champions Celtic in the summer, scores his first Premier League goal. He takes the no-nonsense approach to penalty taking, blasting it hard and straight into the centre of the goal.

The penalty was given after keeper Jussi Jasskalainen flapped at a loose ball on the ground, taking opposition legs out in the process.

Sessegnon 68' 2013/14 Week 11 Highlights by Barclays Premier League

A strange error from Cech gifts West Brom an away lead. He just seems to… forget the ball exists.

No no, please, after you, Mr Ball. Let me show you into the goal. Would you like me to hold your jacket, sir? — Petr Cech.
