1 Iker Casillas (captain) (Real Madrid) Spain Confederations Cup Squad 2013 by Confederations Cup 2013

Real Madrid and Spain captain Casillas endured a miserable end to the 2012/13 club season. He was injured, only to find upon his recovery that he had lost his place in the Madrid starting XI to backup keeper Diego Lopez.

His future as Spain’s first choice is also in doubt. Victor Valdes has been preferred by Del Bosque as of late, and Casillas does not play well with others in the team — rumours of a bitter feud between him and his teammates have persisted for months.

4 Javi Martinez (Bayern Munich) Spain Confederations Cup Squad 2013 by Confederations Cup 2013

Bayern Munich defensive midfielder who is widely regarded as the natural successor to Xabi Alonso, who misses this Cup through injury. Del Bosque played Martinez against Haiti in the weeks before the Confeds Cup, and rotation between Martinez and Xavi in the starting XI is highly likely.

Del Bosque said of his midfield selection dilemma:

[Alonso’s] absence is important because Spain has based its play for a long time on him and Busquets. The team’s play has turned around them, as much in attack as in defence. They gave a calm base to the national team, but Xabi is not here now and we have other more attacking formulas, as we saw the other day against Haiti, with Javi Martinez in midfield and Cazorla and Cesc ahead of him. There are others, more conservative, that we can use on other occasions. We are not crying for Xabi because we have guaranteed solutions

10 Cesc Fábregas (Barcelona) Spain Confederations Cup Squad 2013 by Confederations Cup 2013

Although a box-to-box central midfielder by trade, Fabregas has spent increasing amounts of time in an unfavoured attacking position. He played there for Spain at Euro 2012 due to the absence of David Villa, and also filled in there for Barcelona this year when Lionel Messi was injured.

He’s strongly linked to a transfer away from the Nou Camp this summer, either to former club Arsenal or to Manchester United, but Fabregas himself stated a desire to stay where he is.

9 Fernando Torres (Chelsea) Spain Confederations Cup Squad 2013 by Confederations Cup 2013

His future at Chelsea now, however, appears under threat due to the arrival of uncompromising new manager Jose Mourinho.

16 Sergio Busquets (Barcelona) Spain Confederations Cup Squad 2013 by Confederations Cup 2013

Probably the single most defensive player in Spain’s midfield roster, and an important cog in a Spain machine that is so often lauded for it’s attacking prowess. Vincente Del Bosque was quick to reference the defensive strength of Spain as well as their firepower:

We will decide then when the tournament starts. I have different formulas, and they are all valid. Although Spain has been considered an attacking team who gets a lot of goals, the success in short tournaments was based on our defensive system.

3 Gerard Piqué (Barcelona) Spain Confederations Cup Squad 2013 by Confederations Cup 2013

Barcelona defender and spouse of Shakira.

He said of the friendly in New York on 12/06/2013, which takes place in the Yankee Stadium:

We are happy to come and play in the US, where football is not so well known, because it helps to promote it. I have never played on a baseball field, although I have in a few American Football pitches, but we will be comfortable if the grass is okay. It is an honour for us to play in a ground as mythical as the Camp Nou or the Bernabeu.

7 David Villa (Barcelona) Spain Confederations Cup Squad 2013 by Confederations Cup 2013

David Villa is Spain’s all-time top goalscorer, with 53 goals in 88 caps. Despite missing last year’s Euro 2012 tournament with a broken leg, he is expected by many to keep his place in the starting XI under stiff competition from the likes of Torres and Soldado.

Villa is due to start the friendly against Ireland on 12th June 2013. Del Bosque said:

Villa will be a starter against Ireland

On the subject of whether he would be a regular starter in the Cup, Del Bosque was more coy:

We will decide then when the tournament starts.
