Feral children, those who have been abandoned and somehow survived on their own. Lacking the developmental abilities of prewar children, they become mentally retarded and, in some cases, highly dangerous.

Later in the book, cases of “feral bulls” are described that can be more dangerous than the living dead.

Attempts were made by the US authorities to tranquilise, pacify and attempt to rehabilitate ferals. It is possible, unlike with quislings, people that have snapped and believe themselves to be zombies.

For a while last year, it looked like Stoke might suffer relegation. However a strong end to the season saw them soar up the table to 13th.

This year they’ll struggle. Teams around them have made more new signings, and Stoke replaced their long-serving, effective manager Tony Pulis with Mark Hughes, one of the most inconsistent bosses in the modern game.

If they don’t make any more effective signings, they will be forced to rely on the clean sheet record of goalkeeper Asimir Begovic, who single-handedly kept them in the top flight after Stoke’s forwards largely failed to be prolific in front of goal.

Southampton’s first season back in the Premier League was a mixed one. They performed better than most expected, and played some beautiful attacking football, but they struggled for consistency and incision.

Morgan Schneiderlin will be key to their season. Statistically, he was the best defensive midfielder in England last season, making more interceptions per match than any other. He’s young, still improving and can either lead Soton to glory or be sold eventually for a huge profit. Along with new midfield anchor Victor Wanyama, Southampton’s midfield will be tough to play through.

Things can only get better for Sunderland after a woeful 2012 campaign. New boss Paolo di Canio has revamped his squad and made many new additions, including on-fire American striker Jozy Altidore.

The Yank broke the record for goals scored in a single season by an American in Europe last year, and although he’s in a tougher league now his stature and control are bound to make him a threat in England.

The 26 year old French striker Remy almost moved to Newcastle in January 2013, but opted instead for QPR. With QPR now relegated and unable to afford to keep him, he’s gone on loan to the Magpies for the season as he attempts to crack the French national team ahead of the World Cup next year.

That is, if he doesn’t go to jail for rape. He was bailed shortly after the arrest until a September hearing.

The £6 million transfer fee was paid entirely by the MLS itself, so willing were they to bring one of America’s best players home.

Dempsey will also become the MLS’s highest ever paid player, earning $8 million per year, even more than David Beckham, Thierry Henry and Robbie Keane.

Norwich are perhaps the most-strengthened team going into this year’s Premier League season. They’ve brought new players into the side in all positions, early in the window, and for big money (relative to the small income of the club).

Their main weakness last season was a chronic lack of goals. They scored a meagre 41 goals in 2012/13 (only bottom-placed QPR scored less). Having sold club captain and flagging striker Grant Holt to Wigan Athletic, they have invested in a new front line.

Ricky Van Wolfswinkel will partner Gary Hooper next season, with the latter moving to Norwich in order to bolster his chances of appearing for England in the 2014 World Cup.

West Brom finished last season with their highest ever Premier League points total, and new manager Steve Clarke won plaudits from around the country for his management.

This year will be a tough second season for the Scot. His star striker from last year, Romelu Lukaku, has finished his loan with Albion and returns to Chelsea. To try and combat this, the Baggies signed veteran French striker Nicolas Anelka. He might be in the advanced stages of his career, but his scoring record is consistent and brilliant. Keeping him fit and firing will be key to Clarke repeating last year’s great efforts.

Crystal Palace are going to have to work very hard if they want to stay in the Premier League in their first season back in the top flight.

They are one of the least wealthy teams in the league, and have the smallest stadium by some margin. Their incomings this summer have been rather quiet and low-key compared to fellow promotioners Cardiff and Hull, but Spain U20 international Jose Campana, who signed for 1.5 million pounds from Sevilla, could prove to be a canny buy.

Buying young, unknown talent and then selling them on for a huge profit is the best way to give Palace the funds to compete at a top level – as they are already doing, having just sold star youngster Wilfried Zaha to Manchester United.

In the end, we should all just be grateful to have Ian Holloway back in the Premier League.
