Punning off the previous lines description of ‘bullet laden skies,’ I reference (using a little twist in pronunciation) the similarly spelled ‘Bin Laden,’ who was famously assassinated in 2011.

The South has metaphorically crucified African-Americans over and over again, and the historical practice of lynching in many cases approximated a literal crucifixion. Also intended, no doubt, is a reference to the Ku Klux Klan and their notorious symbolic practice of burning crosses.

Greatest posse cut of all times? Possibly. Who can deny seven fire verses from some of the dopest up-and-comers in the game right now? Props to Rocky for organizing this. It’s a tough call, but Danny Brown’s verse is my favorite; his insights into the science of astronomy are profound!

Lastly, for better or worse, this track also launched the career of one of the world’s most notorious rappers. Don’t let that fact, though, detract from this track’s greatness. Best line:

And I’m thinkin’ ‘bout signin’ to the Roc / but my [brothas] on the block still assigned to the rocks

From the moment I heard the beat drop in that Samsung commercial, I awaited this track with high anticipation. Then for it to feature JT in such prominence only made it a greater highlight for me. Throw in the Nirvana allusions and I was totally smitten. Best line:

Bright lights is enticing, but look what it did to Tyson

This track not only features two dope verses from King Hov, but it’s also the source of one of my favorite recent lines in any song:

You know it’s real when you are who you think you are

This is Drake’s way of saying that he has become the dream that he always imagined growing up. I used this line as a contrasting example when my class was studying T.S. Eliot’s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.

Though Prufrock and Drake both share the same existentialist dilemma, J. Alfred is experiencing the demise of his aspirations, while Drizzy is literally living the dream.
