Doom rocking his King Geedorah (then King Ghidra) persona on what turned out to be one of his only appearances with the Monsta Island Czars.

The beat (which samples the rare groove tune “Mademoiselle” by Foxy) originally appeared on one of Doom’s Special Herbs instrumental albums, credited as being ‘from the cupboard of DJ Spinna’ (whatever that means).

Side note: “Mademoiselle” is better known as the break from “Burial” by Leviticus, a jungle classic.

Enslaving ourselves is a reference to mental slavery, an internalized low self-image that some black people have as a result of negative images of themselves in the mainstream media. Television, movies and magazines are some of the worst offenders.

We’ve come a long way since the days of Amos ‘n’ Andy and Stepin Fetchit but mental slavery is still in effect. The famous 1940s experiment in which African American children favored white dolls over black dolls was recreated in 2006 with identical results. And Chris Rock’s 2009 film Good Hair exposed deep-rooted issues in the black community about self-image.

Deck’s style carries across the skies and over the seas. The line is based on lyrics from two well-known American patriotic songs:

Off we go into the wild blue yonder
Climbing high into the sun
- The US Air Force Song

America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea
- “America the Beautiful”

Translation:

They all want to check it when we lay it down
Coming in and smashing it, the beat I’m awakening it
You know what’s coming out of my mouth
Hanging with the craziest guys
It reminds me that we light it up
Because they all call me “wild fucking chopper”

DOOM and Subroc weren’t actually twins but were only a couple of years apart and so grew up joined at the hip. They did everything together from prayer to clothes shopping.

The salat is an Islamic prayer made up of repeated phrases called raka'at. A hundred raka'at salat would be a prayer with the same phrase repeated one hundred times (or the same two phrases repeated fifty times each etc).

DOOM doesn’t mention his Muslim roots in his later years, but he and his brother spent their formative years practising a form of Islam. Check out the Peachfuzz video or the picture on the back of Operation: Doomsday.

Count also gives nods to The Pointer Sisters and Prince, both of whom released songs in the 80s called “Automatic”.

“Freak Like Me” by R&B singer Adina Howard was a huge hit in 1995.

Ghostface uses the same rhyme in Raekwon’s Ice Cream, also released in 1995:

I’m high powered put Adina Howard to sleep
Yo pardon, that bitch been on my mind all week

Which came first?
