Manderson got the name ‘Professor Green’ through selling weed as a kid. The ‘Green’ part came from weed. He got the name Professor because he was very smart, although dropping out of school; despite having been offered a place at St. Paul’s School Barnes, he decided instead to go to a comprehensive in Tottenham.

Pro suggested a collaboration and asked Lily Allen to feature on “Just Be Good to Green”, the #5 single which marked Professor Green’s breakthrough following “I Need You Tonight”. It samples SOS Band’s 80’s hit “Just Be Good to Me”. The original was also covered & remixed by Fatboy Slim’s Beats International as “Dub Be Good to Me” which happened to be a favourite of Lily Allen’s.

In an interview with The Guardian, Lily Allen had a conversation with Pro which he says “put [him] back on [his] feet”

“That summer, I really thought about jacking it all in,” he recalls. “I was back selling drugs, harder stuff, stuff I don’t even really condone. As I say on the record, ‘I was selling wraps of coke, not raps and flows’. Then, from one conversation with Lily Allen, it really did change direction. She picked me up and put me back on my feet.”

He also toured with the UK pop artist on her “It’s Not Me, It’s You” World Tour in 2009. Pro’s debut was released a year later
