I tell him, if the fact that you don't have a lot of money is a problem/
then instead of getting fed up, what you need to do is wake up
Brotherly Love by Taalam Acey

A lot of people complain about their lack of money while spending it on useless items. Maybe if his friend didn’t spend his money on alcohol, he’d be able to get a better job or at least have more money to support his family. Acey is trying to get him to realize his faults and to change them, rather than complain about them.

And now, what I'm about to say, I want you to listen/
To with all your pride and sexuality inside
Because with God as my guide, like my own self, I love you.
Brotherly Love by Taalam Acey

For some men, it can be tough to say “I love you” to another man. This is because you could be branded as gay or soft, and that’s not something you want to be branded as if you’re not. This emphasizes just how important that his friend is to him. He is important enough that Acey is willing to risk these brands just to help him out.

That's why I'm glad he came to me to give me/
this opportunity to put a few thoughts across
And you see that all day, and all night we talked
Brotherly Love by Taalam Acey

Acey’s friend has hit rock bottom pretty hard, and without Acey’s help he may commit suicide. This is why Acey is glad his friend told him about his issues, for it gives him a chance to boost his friend’s confidence and to let him know that he isn’t all alone in the world.

Who drives a range rover, and plays golf
Brotherly Love by Taalam Acey

Golf is generally viewed as a sport for rich people, for it is fairly expensive to play. Acey is saying that the new boyfriend plays golf to emphasize how wealthy his friend’s ex has become, and how much that she doesn’t need his friend’s alimony. This being true especially because of how poor his friend is.

And I tell him, a man is judged by what's in his soul/
And what's in his heart, and not just what's in his pockets
Brotherly Love by Taalam Acey

Life is too short to base your worth on material wealth. Money won’t make you happy, so you shouldn’t base your self-worth on how much of it you have. Instead, base your worth on your character, for if you are a great person, then you will seldomly be sad.

But somehow, they convince themselves/
that it will be different for their children
And eventually, they'll realize that's a fantasy/
But they need something to believe in until then
Brotherly Love by Taalam Acey

When you are failing at life, a lot of people tend to put the weight of their failures on their children and try to force them to live a better life than they did. Some parents do this overbearingly and end up driving the kids into the same situations that they once were in, like Acey is suggesting. Also, if you couldn’t succeed under these circumstances, then why would you expect your children to? Everyone needs some way to cope with themselves, I guess.
