A black hole is a possible conclusion to a star’s life; meaning that the black hole and starlight could represent the same thing.

In the initial part of the song, the starlight could represent boundless ambition. This is conveyed in a couple of ways:

(1) The phrase “shoot for the stars” is commonly used to represent ambition and the running metaphor of a shapeship targeted at a star visually represents this.

(2) The line “our hopes and expectations” explicitly states that a stars final form (black holes) represents ambition.

Initially, the ambition is portrayed positively, represented by the blazing sun.

In the latter section, Muse undermines this pursuit for success by instead comparing it to a black hole; portraying this metaphoric ‘space race’ as meaningless and less desirable.

Interestingly, relationships are presented as the ultimate life purpose. Imagery conveys them as hidden sources of light (“you electrify my life/let’s conspire to ignite” and “I’ll never let you go/if you promise not to fade away”), that unlike starlight, is attainable since they are right here on Earth.

This song also links to Megalomania in the sense that the persona’s search for their personal life purpose has concluded, and now they must learn how to fulfil it.

Yeah, I agree with Gus, He is chasing the dream girl of his life. At one point he was unsure about getting her into his life, but with chorus and Hook 2 he’s pleading to his girl to be with him forever. I love classic Muse’s love song. I’d still think this is precursor or forerunner of Neutron Star Collision if you think about it.

I think he HOPES to chase the starlight until the very end, i. e. have a sense of wonder. The starlight is something or someone that inspires that (youthful) sense of wonder. It could be anything.

idk let’s say starlight is a her. n he’ll chase her till the end of his life n maybe realizing he can’t have her means life is no longer worth living
