Even though Winston holds a dissenting opinion – opposing the Ingsoc party – his method of thought is still programmed by the state, as shown by this diary entry, to be obsessive and fanatic. This is in line with Winston’s earlier reflection during the Two Minutes of Hate:

ONe thing I always try to do is make sure in a short piece of writing I never repeat a word. You’ve already used “fascinating” in “ever-fascinating” so maybe change up that usage? Because “childish fascination” here is a very nice and probably fitting phrase

“thirst for” is how the idomatic expression goes I think. This change would then change the following word to “exploration” or “exploring” to fit

“finished” or a synonym?

“Come off” almost makes it sound like a binge haha but I think the word you choose here could really get across just what you put into that c++ marathon!

This doesn’t really fit – et al. is short for “et alia”, Latin for “and others”, often used to refer to authors of a scholarly paper

Maybe opt for something along the lines of “and the like” or “and other such things” etc?

Notice the progression of desired drinks in the story: gin → whiskey.

Like many other aspects of “The Swimmer,” (weather, mood, pool quality) there is a change from light to dark, good to bad. Also consider the general thoughts that accompany the ideas of the individual drinks, from “Oh gin, how nice and light – refreshing!” to “I just need some whiskey to carry on” – the second of course highlighting the alcoholism theme.
