Born Loseb Jughasvili in the small town of Gori, Georgia, 1878. Stalin took advantage of a power vacuum occurring after the Russian revolution and the unexpected death of Vladimir Lenin. He created a position for himself that afforded complete control over the Russian empire. He caused a level of terror and chaos on his own people that the tsars of imperial Russia couldn’t come close to reaching. It is widely debated the number of deaths he is responsible for but scholars estimate in the millions. The eyes of the world turned to him in 1942 when Hitler launched a surprise invasion against the Soviet Union. Some decisions he made aided in his victory and other decisions would cost the lives of countless red army soldiers due to his military inexperience. He eventually gave more military power to his generals, especially Georgy Zhukov who would later become the minister of defense. They launched successful, rapid counterattacks against Germany and eventually defeat the Nazis in 1945. After the war, Stalin maintained control of Eastern Germany, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, and Albania. He made them all Soviet satellite states and enforced the Soviet Union’s ideologies there. He would die in 1953 from a stroke. Stalin’s actions and accomplishments would make him one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. His admirers see a strong leader who modernized Russia and fought off Hitler. His detractors see a paranoid, mass-murderer who created an evil regime that spread its influence throughout the world.

A classic blues song featuring the iconic lap slide guitar. It’s plot features a commonly used blues theme; doing hard time in prison.

It seems that this man was previously jailed for armed robbery. The chorus makes it seem as though he committed another crime and the law is coming for him. It sounds like he is contemplating suicide and wants to be with god. He can’t take the thought of going to jail again.

Most of his troubles stemmed from his return from Vietnam. He couldn’t find work and had a family to feed. Maybe he committed armed robbery to feed his family.

Terrace Martin gives us a tender love song laced with a classic west coast hip-hop sound. He speaks of a woman that he is involved with and his deep love for her. It has an innocence to it, the song is not of lust but rather the joy of a meaningful relationship.

This song was released on an earlier album by Terrace called Times.
It also received an accompanying music video

Egypt and Libya are both located in continental Africa. However if you asked most people, they would consider these two countries to be in the Middle East. This is because their culture is very similar to middle eastern countries.

This is concerning to people of African descent for many reasons. Egypt in particular was one of the most successful civilizations in human history. By saying that Egypt is a part of the Middle East is taking away from Africa’s heritage and pride.

The year this is taking place is 1977, the height of the disco era. In this episode it shows a clip of a news report saying that 1977 had the highest sales of disco records ever.

Hip-hop was still very underground at this point and no record company would sign a hip-hop act. It wouldn’t be until 1979 when Sugarhill Gang released Rapper’s Delight that hip-hop would be introduced to a public audience.

Disco needed to die off so hip-hop could live and flourish. People involved in “the get down” saw that hip-hop could better represent their situation than disco. Hip-Hop had a grittier sound that appealed to people living in run-down New York. Disco was starting to sound boring and monotonous. When their neighborhoods were burning and overwhelmed by violence, the youth turned to hip-hop to express their struggles.

This statement highlights the beliefs held by the Nation of Islam. First, they believed that all white people were devils. The “grafted” part comes from the idea that white men were created by skin grafts. The person who created them is known as Yakub who was a black scientist. Yakub is actually Jacob who can be found in the bible. The Nation if Islam belief is:

6 ,600 years ago, Yakub was responsible for creating the white race to be a “race of devils”. He is said to have done this through a form of selective breeding referred to as “grafting”, while living on the island of Patmos.

This verse is also used in a remix for Goodies by Ciara.

I’m not sure if it was an official remix but the verse is longer and in my opinion better.

The indigenous peoples of North America were eradicated by Europeans and their descendants from the time of initial colonization to the last indian warrior surrending. This was in some cases a systematic and intentional holocaust in the name of land gains. It should also be noted that a large percentage of Native Americans died from European diseases which they had no immunity to, in effect, creating an unintentional holocaust.

A particularly awful act done against the indigenous people by the U.S government was The Trail of Tears. A forced relocation ordered by the highly racist president Andrew Jackson. The Native Americans were subjected to horrible conditions along this route and over 10,000 perished

A breakup song very reminiscent of Alkaline Trio’s Radio . It seems like this couple has gotten to the point where they are completely done with each other. The singer is apathetic, spiteful, and borderline alcoholic, just like Radio.
