tied together with the next line, it is a reference to enjoying eachother’s company when we would have sexual relations, but it had been some time since we had actually enjoyed eachother’s company fully. the devilish grins are a symbol of self serving motives.

at a certain point it seemed as though we were only living together still because the lease wasn’t up on our apartment yet. twiddling thumbs is how you blow time, we weren’t married hence the “living in sin” which is what christian folks refer to living together pre-marriage.

it was like we didn’t know eachother anymore. our signals were getting crossed and miscommunicating constantly.

it got to the point where we didn’t even want to sleep next to eachother, but we were living together and had to. when we would try to show affection the other would often shrug it off.

the girl i wrote this about was constantly fighting with me towards the end of the relationship. she complained that i never had sex with her anymore, and the fact that she complained about it made me want to have sex with her even less.

This was my way of saying: “you should channel your energy into something a little more positive, and then you would get a more positive response”
