This verse is different from the others. In the other verses, he tells this female he is having a conversation with that she is entitled to have the object (or something else) to tell her she is special. In this however, he just tells her about something he has, without implying she is special at all. It must have been too important to leave out!

In this verse, the narrator speaks of a homeless mouse, whom he seems to be friends with by how he speaks. This friendship is sort of weird, due to the fact if the mouse does not have a home, they have to meet eachother outside. The mouse must be pretty smart to know where to find the speaker. A very good mouse. There is probably no reason (such as a pop-culture reference) why the man would call the mouse as Gerald, since this guy himself does not even know the reason he calls the mouse Gerald. But, the real question is: Who is older, Mr. Jingles or Gerald.

“he hasn’t got a house I don’t know why I call him Gerald” could also have a double meaning do to the way it was phrased.

He could be saying that he doesn’t know why the mouse doesn’t have a house but at the same time, saying that he doesn’t know why he calls him Gerald.

The name of the mouse, Gerald, could be a reference to the popular cartoon Tom and Jerry, in which the mouse is called Jerry, a diminutive form of Gerald

This chorus furthers two ideas earlier mentioned.

  • He has got a large amount of fancy items. In fact, if you want, you can get some. That shows he has such a large amount, he could just give it away!
  • This girl is quite special. The Narrator feels that she can relate to him, and he can relate to her. They have the same mind.

I think the most important line here is “if you want things” and it completely colors the nature of the song. He doesn’t have a lot of nice things, he has a bike which he doesn’t own, and then his boasts become less impressive from there.

He likes her, and would like give her nice things if she wants them and he had them, and he boasts to get her attention. However, it is a test of her to see if she is materialistic, and he throws that in there hoping she isn’t.
