Growing pains refers the muscular pain thought to be caused by the fast growth of bones, at a rate which is faster than your muscles can adjust too. In the hood, children’s growing pains aren’t due to fast growth, but rather due to being shot.
Basically, being shot is just a normal part of growing up in poverty, in fact it is so common it is just seen as a growing pain.

Kids are often initiated into a gang at a young age in the hood – this is usually accompanied by a task they have to fulfill (murder, rob etc/) in order to be accepted. Thus it’s not wise to underestimate how dangerous they are, especially if you think they wouldn’t know how to shoot a gun.

Real world troubles were holding Phonte back like a cross-face (which is a wrestling pin down).
I would amend this annotation to include the first word of the next bar. The way you have the bars split up is perfect, but Phonte is referring to a different wrestling submission hold called the Crossface Chickenwing (not to be confused with the standard Crossface submission hold you show in your example). It was popularized by wrestler and WWE Hall of Famer Bob Backlund back in the 1980s.
