Machop is a human-like fighting-type Pokémon. Its muscles will never tire or cramp no matter how long it trains and he’s super strong.
He evolves into Machoke, who evolves into Machamp when traded.
He’s weak to Flying, Psychic and Fair-type Pokémon but resistant to Rock, Bug and Dark-type Pokémon.
They can be found in mountains.

His origial English name was going to be “Kara-tee” obviously based off the martial arts fighting style karate but presumably naming him directly off a activity related to violence was a no go for a video game directed at kids.
So instead they named him “Machop”, a combination of ‘macho’ (to be tough or masculine) and ‘chop’.
While chopping is realated to karate and is a move that can be used to inflict pain upon a another person the stigma mostly associated with chopping is boards and blocks. Ironically you see Machop and the rest of its evolutionary line participating in construction quite frequently.

(Machop flattening the ground in Vermillion in the reamke of the original game.)

Even though it’s name means “to be manly” not all Machop are male although the gender rate of Machop is 3:1 in males favor.

In the Japanese version it’s name is Wanriky which is a combination of “wan” (arm) and “riki” (strength).

Hitmonchan, the boxer Pokemon, specializes in punching. He has a humanized form and wears a tunic. His name, when broken down, is ‘Hit’ (as in to hit someone) ‘mon’ (monster) ‘chan’ (taken from the famous martial artist Jackie Chan).

While it’s well know where the ‘chan’ was influenced from there has never been a good reasoning behind it. While Jackie Chan does use his fist and techniques such as ‘drunken boxing’, Hitmonchan’s design is based off of a western fighting style. Presumably naming him after a boxer was a big no-no from Nintendo (due to copyright, see Street Fighter and Mike Tyson’s Punch Out! or the fact boxing is very violent) and so they named him after a more “family friendly” persona.

This theory is further supported by the fact in the Japanese version of the game his name is Ebiwalar, based on the Japanese boxing champion Hiroyuki Ebihara.

Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee were the first two Pokemon to be related but not share a evolution, this was later changed with the introduction of the pre-evolution Tyrogue.

While Hitmonlee kind of looks like a foot, Hitmonchans face looks somewhat like a hand. Both of them are supposed to be embodiment’s of their respect fighting styles. Hitmonchans gloves are normally red but a shiny version dons blue gloves, this is reflective of the red corner/blue corner concept of boxing.

A reference to an inscription on a grave in the town of Elfheim, referring to the legendary hero from the Dragon Quest series. The name on the grave was originally that of Link from The Legend Of Zelda in the Japanese version, but was changed to Erdrick in the American release. Further rereleases of the game reverted this back to “Link”
