Mos Def is from the area of Brooklyn around Broadway and Myrtle Ave (as he explains in the song “Champion Requiem”). The intersection of Broadway and Myrtle ave is directly underneath the J M Z, and this part of the subway is above ground and casts a considerable shadow. I also think that midnight is used here as an allusion to the number 12. He did skip the number 11, but it would make sense with the chronological rise in numbers that he uses here.
