The technological age brought about the rise of ultra-wealthy “nerds” such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg, who have proven that all that’s needed to change perceptions is showing how an identity can make you a lot of money. Granted, BBC ruminated on this phenomenon and found that monetary associations are one segment; other desirable traits like intelligence and quirkiness are directly associated with nerd-dom. The original Star Trek series began in 1966, just over a decade and a half after “nerd” first entered the lexicon courtesy of Dr. Seuss in If I Ran The Zoo.

This assumption by Mencius fails to take into account the psychological association we feel with other humans. We have a familiarity that allows us to, to an extent, realistically visualize ourselves in the position of the child at the bottom of the well.
