This sort of appropriation of a symbol that was used to hold down a race of people is powerful. It begs the question, ‘how can use something against me that I claim?’

James Baldwin famously took a slightly different approach in regards to the word “nigger”. As he explained it, the entire idea is an invention of white people to understand the other race’s place in society. But, as Baldwin said, “I am not the victim here” and so he could not be held down by the term. The entire notion of “ the nigger” was unnecessary to Baldwin and so, as he said, “I give you the problem back”:
