I got all my problems, but I no have no weed
When they say money solve 'em, I say "No, not me"
Menthol by Isaiah Rashad (Ft. Jean Deaux) 1

Unlike Jay Z, Jean has to deal with every last problem she faces, and she has no weed to help cope!

But while money might make some problems go away for other people, her issues can not be bought away. After all, hearts have no currency.

7. Think before you post! Community Core Values by Rap Genius

When a forum thread gets heated, write your response, go away from it for awhile, and then come back and delete half of it.

Some users will troll you, but you have to show refrain and patience.

6. LISTEN Community Core Values by Rap Genius

I know that I know nothing.
– Socrates

Most of our moderators are super users. They might even know more about RG and how to use RG than you do! #NoLie So don’t dismiss them or their grievances even if you know what the answer is. It’s important to hear them out and respect their contributions to the site.

Respect the employee-community balance and be willing to learn from them.

5. Be a resource Community Core Values by Rap Genius

Know RG backwards and forwards, understand our principles and encourage users through this.

E.g. Rephrasings are a no-no on the site. Know that, avoid tating like that, and when you find a rephrasing, message the user, and help them improve the tate to be additive and interesting vs redundant.

1. Build REAL relationships Community Core Values by Rap Genius

RG is only as strong as its community is!

Get to know users because that’s what makes them go the distance and stay involved with RG.

4. Message early and often Community Core Values by Rap Genius

Cardinal rule of RG: message with reckless abandon!

People stay on RG because it’s alive! They interact with people, feel connected to something, and become invested in it. So message them to let them know there’s a community of people here. Hit them up to give feedback but also just to involve them in what we’re doing.

Not every message should be about doing something better. Sometimes it’s good to send a message just to say hi or to let them know you liked a tate.

2. Talk TO people, not at them Community Core Values by Rap Genius

… but do @ them!

The worst way you can talk to users is to talk at them. There are real people on the other side of these usernames, engage with them. If you’re addressing something a specific user said in a forum thread, @ them. Just like you’d make eye contact with someone IRL, make contact with users.

However, sometimes conversations don’t need to happen in the forums and you should take it to private messages or even to a Google hangout (i.e. “Teams” projects). Even in your messages, still be courteous to users and treat them like the humans they are.

That also means NO “AD posts”. Everyone can spot an AD tweet from a mile away and it gets no RTs because it’s lame. Talk to people like you would talk to your friends in real life.

Sidenote: Diatribes are okay, but be weary of TL;DR

3. Lead by example Community Core Values by Rap Genius

The best way to convince, rally, inspire the community to do anything is to lead by example. A lot of our users are young. Their intentions are good, but they also need guidance. Be the best editor and moderator you can be so that you might inspire that in them as well. Use a voice in the forum that might affect them to communicate better as well.

be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

8. Never forget... Community Core Values by Rap Genius

LESS TALK, MORE TATE

At the end of the day, we’re an annotation site! Yes, our community is the lifeblood of the site, but we can’t get so distracted that we forget what RG is about. So, when it comes down to it, remind the world what we’re here to do.

The cousin of death
Dozin off at they doorstep
Still Alive by Kami de Chukwu (Ft. Joey Purp)

Kami cleverly plays off of an adage that a wise man — i.e. Nas — already told us:

Sleep is the cousin of death
