Youth Lagoon’s debut album explored themes such as psychological dysphoria and mental distress that Powers had either seen or experienced.

The narrator defends his odd tendencies by declaring that his love, unlike the loves that his partner might be experiencing with other guys, is long lasting and has been burning since Outkast dropped Hey Ya!.

(That’s a long time).

Everyone’s on Twitter and Facebook now – from the massive corporations to your local salesman (and your family). As the narrator describes, the broader and more overwhelming it gets, we are becoming more scripted and less human.

Human beings are the ones who have multiple emotions, thoughts, feelings etc. whereas a robot such as a computer or any electronic device which thinks, feels, and behaves with a prefixed guidance or program set by the human being itself.

It is true, no machine in the world acts by its own but a human being acts as per its whims and fancies. The transformation of man from stone age to today’s highly advanced technological age is only because of his own mind power.

Damon declares there are only two ways to live your life in this robotic age, as a controller or someone who is sold like a slave.

Presumably, the controllers are members of high authority, much like the Man, members of parliament, world leaders and even the police who appear to control and puppet the population.

The sold then, we can only assume, is the rest of us. The narrator describes humans as in the process of being sold, meaning we have not yet been traded but will eventually, menancingly enough, we are never told when we will be sold or if we will at all in the following verses.

Albarn describes the older generation trying to strive through the internet age. Their lips get cold and physically they can not operate any more, slowly they begin to resemble a standing stone (or more literally a Menhir), unironically something that has no technological features or chateristics.

And if that wasn’t depressing enough, the narrator rounds the verse off by claiming that the old stones are alone in a world full of people on their phones.

A ringback tone is a noise that is heard on the telephone line by the caller while the phone they are calling is being rung.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zrO-PGP_yo

The metaphor here is that a ringback tone repeats, much like the life of an average citizen, it happens every day, month, year.

It is possible that Albarn is commenting on children with the use of little here or maybe he is simply commenting on the insignificance and futility of the human race being small due to technology shrinking and enwrapping us.

This is a sample of 1940-50s comic performer Lord Buckley’s hipsemantic Rant on lesser known Spanish Explorer-Alvar Nunez Cabeza De Vaca.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uX-dhT6qoXA&feature=youtu.be&t=2m2s

The Spanish explorer was Shipwrecked, and was Marooned on the Texas coast- where he wandered for 8 years in a land no European had ever seen.

The sample is used to question the position of humans in modern day Earth. They here is humans, basically Albarn is claiming that we know where are right now but because of the violent and dramatic evolution of technology, we have no idea what could happen in the next few years.

The narrator may in fact believe that this is true but wishes he didn’t. Either way, you might never realize (from those words alone) how bleak the intent. That is, if you weren’t hearing the song, the sadness of the tone, the delivery and of the words which follow.

Above all, Round the Bend is about how cruel people can be to each other. When Beck says this line, he is not being cynical or judgmental, he’s making an observation.

Alternatively, it could be describing the animosity than can develop between two people who don’t give each other space.
