The Spanish explorer was Shipwrecked, and was Marooned on the Texas coast- where he wandered for 8 years in a land no European had ever seen.

Above all, Round the Bend is about how cruel people can be to each other. When Beck says this line, he is not being cynical or judgmental, he’s making an observation.
