Lupe proffers that just because you listen to the words that Tupac spit about “change,” doesn’t do anything for the betterment of the world. Not putting your thoughts into action isn’t good enough and will ultimately not evoke the real-world change needed, which is the theme of the song.

Keeping your thoughts to yourself isn’t good enough. Speak up!

Thoughts —–> Words —–> Actions! —–> REVOLUTION

Kind of like Gandhi’s “Be the change you wish to see in the world” quote. Very proactive as it is provocative.

As opposed to the elite, Lupe believes in the “people’s” right to self-determination and to govern themselves. NOTE: “PBUH” is not a nickname for the Prophet Muhammed, it means “peace be upon him” and is uttered after the name of many prophets is said, including Jesus, Moses, Abraham. It is NOT the Prophet Muhammed’s nickname. It makes no sense to say “i believe in the ‘pbuh’”. Lupe is clearly saying “I believe in the people.” End of debate.

The public schools which are funded by govt and affected by cuts are already performing pretty badly in terms of pass percentages, average GPAs, etc, and a significant number of students from those schools end up not going to college.

Also a stab at No Child Left Behind, a Bush-era policy which rewards schools that perform well on standardized testing with increased funding…and take money away from the schools that do poorly. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer.

In addition, the children who were blessed and privileged enough to go to top private schools, private schools that despite their costly price tags did not provide the INDIVIDUALIZED level of education and attention it promised ergo even a number of the private schools are garbage.

The play on words used here were very smart, mentioning the budget cuts, he uses uppercut to possibly have a double meaning. One being a punch, the other being an upper cut, meaning the first to be cut

Lu is identifying the thinking that causes people to not stand up for their beliefs. Public image in america is important beyond sense. Societal pressures are what keeps people ‘in check’

Lupe writes this line in the first person, telling us, the listeners, that he’s afraid what we may think of him after this song—he bashes the government of our country, the prophets of our religions. Are we going to turn against him for telling us the cold, hard facts, or are we going to embrace his words as a catalyst for change?

Major news networks spend half of their time on milquetoast reportage (about actual issues) and the rest on gossip (that gets great ratings!)

People think that Jersey Shore is vapid but Lupe considers the media, the “fourth branch” of government/people who should “speak truth to power,” to be just as bad

These bars have an Immortal Technique feel, too

The priority of the media is not informing the people but rather get ratings. As a society we have become shallow in our thoughts, giving more importance to mundane things.

As the romans would say: “Panem et circenses”

Bread and circuses, my friends.

the tv and forms of entertainment were made to keep the ppl enertained and filled with the thoughts of tv and such istead of world events and other more important thing like what really our gov is really doing its a great way to keep us busy and not wonder about what really is going on to keep us calm and not act against the atrocities that they are planning aginst the ppl us their main goal is to eliminate HUMANITY they have been planning to get humanity under 500 million so that means a lot of us won’t be hear tomarrow cause we don’t stand up because we are to busy talking about the media such as gossip

i think lupe is saying when u turn the TV on you just hear bunch of gossips about who is dating who and even though it may seem you are watching Jersey Shore but actually you are watching a news station , stations that are supposed to be telling us the true NEWS like Gaza being bombed and Obama not saying a word about it, Glen Back being a racist an so on…

Can we get the name of that study for the news? I want to use it in a paper.

He is saying that the news system is no longer giving the truth, but rumors, gossip, and other useless crap. And the Jersey Shore part just means that that is the stuff you’d expect to get from a stupid show such as Jersey Shore.

I have two interpretation for the Jersey Shore line.
He is making Jersey Shore literally the same thing as watching the news, which are all about gossip and ratings. The same way one would watch the “news” to find out about whatever gossip there needs to be said and drama starters is the same way one would watch Jersey Shore for the household gossip and drama.
My other interpretation is that Jersey Shore is a psycho-sociological reporting without the journalists and commentaries. Jersey Shore is literally the news showing us how we behave; we tend to behave with the same drama seen on the show.
