Here, AKA brings in some more social commentary specifically on the South African youth’s knowledge of American trends and history compared to their own.

The first line displays AKA’s dislike for Migos' Versace, Versace, for various reasons. It may be because the lyrics are purely ignorant, yet people still love it. Just like how the internet love Young Thug, he’s not even a rapper at all. He may also be anti-versace because many South African rappers have used that flow in the exact same format Drake used. AKA has spoken out against South African people being more supportive of American music and culture than their own many times. See here.

In the second line, AKA excellently shows the state of ignorance amongst the youth about their own country. Chris Hani was the leader of the SACP and an anti-apartheid activist. His assassination in 1993, a year before South Africa was to gain independence, raised tensions between blacks and whites in South Africa and nearly led South Africa into a civil war.

Note the two ironies here:

  1. Children go to school yet they don’t even know their own history purely because the South African education system teaches the history of other countries instead and because the kids don’t want to learn about it.

  2. They don’t know anything about South African history yet they can tell you a lot about Drake.

The first part:

Summertime in South Africa is the period artists fight for the most because it’s holiday time and people are turning up. Now, AKA just released Levels in the winter but it is full of songs that are perfect for the summertime. Example: All Eyes On Me. Basically, the summer is his. Also note how he highlights how the seasons affect the hustle: In Joburg, the winter is EXTREMELY cold and so the conditions are not exactly welcoming. Meaning many people are looking to stay warm in their homes. This also gives people a chance to put in the necessary work they need to put in for the summertime. In Summer, that’s when everybody comes out to play.

The second part:
Last year, AKA released Kontrol in March but he pretty much owned the radio waves all through to January of this year. This year, he’s planning to do it again.
Note the bar here:

He wants complete power. He shows this by comparing himself to Muammar Gaddafi who was the leader of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya.

Dude has just declared war on you rappers.

Reference to Started From The Bottom.

AKA begins his verse with a little throwback here. Before he owned his VW Scirocco, he started with his mom’s bakkie.

South African Slang 101:

A bakkie is an Afrikaans word used to describe a pick-up truck. According to wikipedia, the word was derived from the ‘Bak’ – Afrikaans for ‘Bowl’ – and the word ‘Buggy.’ Bakkies are popular in South Africa, especially ones from manufacturers such as Toyota and Isuzu. Example:

AKA’s 3rd single from his #1 sophomore album, Levels.

South African Slang 101:

Jozi—Joburg (Johannesburg)

This single sees AKA collaborating with the Cashtime Tsotsi For Life, KO, who is 1/3 of Teargas. Since AKA did say he was fusing South African samples, mainly house music, with hip-hop beats, we wonder which song he used in this heater.

The two rappers also pay homage to the legendary TKZee.

Since the song is called ‘Run Jozi,’ AKA and KO give a bird’s-eye-view of what Jozi truly is through loads of braggadocio, punchlines, as well as social commentary.

This album was a huge difference in comparison to his previous effort, Alter Ego. A lot of different elements have come in to play, considering the spike in stardom since Alter Ego and his new found friendship with Da L.E.S. AKA shows a grown, matured version of himself. Tackling everything like gold-digger girlfriends to, well, just having too much money! He also went with a lot of samples this time, especially old South African house.

This song serves as the fourth single of Levels.

Sim Dope is AKA’s high school friend whom AKA describes as, “very fortunate.” This song sees AKA speaking about Sim Dope and aspiring to reach his level of living.

It features a sample of a popular 2011 house hit “Mama Afrika” by Mr.O & MXO which featured on DJ Sbu’s Sound Revival album.

Boss yamaMag, Boss yamaSwag.

One of SA’s most respected producers, sneakerheads and rappers.
Riky was first known around 2009, 2010, when he dropped mixtapes such as The Comeback Kid and Last Summer with Da L.E.S. He then took a bit of a break…..

Then he dropped Amantombazane. The music speaks for itself. He even says it on the remix:

Who you know that took a break and came alive like I did?

Still riding high of the success of Amantombazane, Riky just dropped his second single, Fok Julle Naaiers and is also part of Boyzn Buck$ along with close friend and collaborator, Okmalumkoolkat.
