Slug’s not in the game for attention, and as a result won’t do things specifically for attention’s sake (Miley Cyrus is probably one of the best examples of somebody who could be accused of tripping on attention, especially given the nude music videos and twerking, although Kanye West has been similarly accused). However, he isn’t adverse to the attention (perhaps in the way Eminem was early in his career, typified by the song The Way I Am).

Slug admitting that he does have peers in the rap game, although not many. Following in the long tradition of lines in hip hop playing with the idea of his raps being ‘sick’ (from Nas naming an album Illmatic to Eminem saying “I’m cancerous” in Role Model), Slug says that he’ll give just enough of his ill lines to other emcees (in the form of battles or disses) to cause them infections.

Slug uses an extended metaphor in these lines, comparing his dream to be a rapper to a seed. It seems that his desire to succeed as a rapper was ingrained in him from an early age, and the dream was allowed to take root and grow, to the point where Slug’s career would begin to blossom start seeing light.

Speaking here about the telephone, Slug uses this simple situation to show how single-minded he is, and how strong his drive towards his goal is of becoming a rapper. He has no interest in things which will not lead him to that goal, nor does he have time to waste.

An Asterisk is this symbol: *, and it is often used to show that there is more information to be considered. It is widely used in advertisements, such as the one below:

This was the original composition of Atmosphere, Slug and Spawn the emcees, Ant the producer and Stress who recorded and mixed the album with Ant. Shortly after Overcast! dropped, Spawn left the group – he now raps under the name Rek the Heavyweight.

Rek the Heavyweight, formerly Spawn of Atmosphere

Stress went on to do recording for the Lucy Ford: The Atmosphere EP’s album, but after Overcast! Atmosphere was understood to be the duo of Slug and Ant. This continued until the release of their most recent (2011) album The Family Sign, where Nate Collis on guitar and Erick Anderson on keyboards were added to form a band. This is the current composition of Atmosphere.

Telling other emcees not to bother with their artificial raps, Spawn uses a grammar popularized in the Star Wars films by jedi master Yoda – rearranging the sentence structure.

See through you, we can"
-Yoda in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

This style is not unknown to other rappers, with Common perhaps being one of the better-known exponents:

Regardless of what happen on him let’s rely"

Since emcees don’t seem to actually have any strength, courage or indeed backbone (all of the things associated with masculinity, which have been encapsulated by the word ‘balls’), it seems that their balls are largely decorative, much like a trophy. Slug will put them in a display case (where trophies are kept) as evidence of his victory.

With the rise of the Feminist movement in the 1960s, a myth started circulating that they burned their bras at a number of protests. While this did happen in a few incidents, it was not nearly as widespread as it is now thought to have been.

By suggesting that emcees should burn their bras, Slug is saying that they are all effeminate, weak and oppressed; and need to break out of this. Maybe they’re effeminate because Slug has their balls in a display case?

Slug’s son Jacob is heavily referenced in his music, especially on this album (Overcast!), as well as dedicating a verse to him in the later track Little Man.

Fuck your fame I’m trying to build some game for my man Jacob
That’s my son
Some say spittin' image
Same smile different grimace

If the Rhymesayers crew don’t respond to the challenge posed by the rival rap crews, they’ll soon start to lose respect on the scene and find themselves fighting for a space in the industry.
