The relationship has passed its sell-by date, and expired. The metaphor of a shelf life is quite appropriate. Slug spends the next line searching for another metaphor, this time to describe the reason for the collapse, fiddling with the ideas of:

  • a broken engine (a lack of drive/purpose and as a result, a forced stagnation)

  • cracked the block (this is a bit more vague. It seems he might be talking about a ‘building block’, and its being damaged has resulted in the house falling down due to faulty foundations.)

Showcasing his ability to play with words, Slug alliterates the syllable ‘in’, using the word itself in the previous line and then switching it up in this line as a prefix, in addition to rhyming multiple syllables internally.

Techniques aside, Slug seems to be saying that the things that bother us most are not in our faces, but are intangible – the things we go through daily which we can’t escape by leaving our current settings.

Continuing with the schooling metaphor, Slug says that the people he relates to in this classroom setting (of hip hop) are the chaps who have been unable to progress to the next level – people on the independent hip hop scene from labels such as Definitive Jux or Slug’s own label Rhymesayers. The system is holding these artists back, like perceived ‘slow’ kids in grade school.
