The relationship has passed its sell-by date, and expired. The metaphor of a shelf life is quite appropriate. Slug spends the next line searching for another metaphor, this time to describe the reason for the collapse, fiddling with the ideas of:
a broken engine (a lack of drive/purpose and as a result, a forced stagnation)
cracked the block (this is a bit more vague. It seems he might be talking about a ‘building block’, and its being damaged has resulted in the house falling down due to faulty foundations.)
Cracked the block is also a direct reference to an engine block.

When he says ‘I don’t know, cracked the block’ he is still using the engine metaphor, guessing at what is wrong. A cracked engine block pretty much means the death of the engine
