Fashion is always changing and people like to wear whats in style. Same goes for music. The main style of rap is to talk about bad bitches and smoking weed. He’s upset that no one can write a song about something that has actual meaning to them, but would rather rap about the same thing as everyone else because it’s in “style”.

Ain’t no secret I’m murdering anything I get on

Gem murders, or excels on, any beat that he raps over, weather in a feature with Lupe Fiasco or on an Adele inspired track like this one.

Ain’t no reason for surgery

He kills the track with such force that there is no point in going in to surgery to try to save it. It’s a lost case, the track has been destroyed.

Silence so we can mourn

In most circumstances when someone passes we give a moment of silence out of respect. Although Gem doesn’t extend such a courtesy to this beat, hardly pausing for a breath for 4+ verses, his does rap this first verse in a somewhat hushed tone.

Girls will find things to distract them from the real problems in a relationship, because they don’t want to admit that it could failing. Just turning the other way, and becoming in denial.

Early versions of this song favored “snorting coke” over “huffing glue”. Broadripple has historically been a bar and clubbing district at night. At the time the song was penned, many divey establishments (such as the Alley Cat Lounge) had yet to give way to more upscale clubs.

Broad Ripple Village is a trendy neighborhood in Indianapolis, Indiana, located just a few minutes away from Butler University.

This song was written before extensive gentrification of the parts of Indianapolis discussed. In the 90’s and early 2000’s Broadripple (as well as Fountain Square) were thought of as run down and crime prone, with their glory days well past.

The title of the song “Broadripple is Burning” is a potential analogy to the early 20th century fire that destroyed Broad Ripple High School.
