About Sy Smith

After graduating from Howard University with a degree in Psychology, eclectic underground singer/songwriter Sy Smith launched her music career with the appropriately titled debut Psykosoul on Hollywood Records in 1999.

She decided to take control of her career and start her own label, Psykosoul Records. Independently, Sy released her follow-ups The Syberspace Social and Conflict to critical acclaim. In 2012, she veered into electronic soul for the Mark de Clive-Lowe-produced Fast and Curious featuring the hit single “Truth.”

Between releases, Sy has kept her star visible with appearances in music (as supporting vocalist for Whitney Houston, Chris Botti, Chaka Khan, Sheila E.), television (Ally McBeal, Soul Food, American Idol), and commercials (GAP Clothing). She regularly collaborates with Zo! and Phonte of The Foreign Exchange.

She released her fifth album, the entirely self-written and self-produced Sometimes A Rose Will Grow In Concrete in 2018 featuring the singles “Now and Later,” “Perspective,” and “Camelot.” A remix EP titled Sometimes A Rose Will Get A Remix would follow in 2019.

Her sixth release Until We Meet Again appeared in January 2024, preceded by the slippery R&B single “Slide” produced by Zo! and Tall Black Guy.
