Before they got caught, Gibbs was cooking crack and making serious money.

We leave the past and see Gibbs– now reflecting over some good weed. A true thug burns down to forget the struggles of his past.

“Turnt up to get turnt down” has a couple meanings. The most obvious is amazing fadedness, but given the last few verses, it also probably means the ecstatic highs and lows of gangster life. “Turnt up” is the excitement of success. “turnt down” is the crash of getting caught.

Gibbs found a drug supplier out of the country. His homeboy chipped in and they bought a LOT of drugs.

Unfortunately, Gibbs got arrested pretty shortly after that, though he didn’t go down without a fight.

Back in the good ole' days, when you were probably listening to Sisqo, Gibbs was buying ounces of Coke for $500 a pop!

On a probably unrelated but definitely funny note, you should check out Sisqo’s bit role in the movie/abomination of the film medium: surf school.

DOUBLE ENTENDRE ALERTTTTT

With the comma, Gibbs is saying he spent most of his life on the streets selling cocaine (a pretty thug lifestyle).

Without the comma, he’s probly having sex with a white girl.

“Muddy cup” is slang for lean, which is itself slang for a mixture of Codeine, Sprite, and purple Jolly Ranchers.

This is also a subtle nod to the tune’s Texas sound. Lifted– who produced the track– is from Phoenix. Lean is from Houston, hence “Texas dope.”

He then twists it back to Oakland– near L.A– where he lives. Gibbs’s music combines the best parts of southern and west-coast rap, just like the deliciously hazy combo of Texas lean and Cali weed.

Many of Springsteen’s characters are lost soul’s – people who can’t seem to find roots. They are in a constant state of relocation.

In earlier songs like Thunder Road and Born to Run, he explores this on a more youthful, rebellious level.

On Nebraska however, most of these characters are lost due to personal struggles. They are in motion because no community is willing to embrace them.
