Hip Hop around the world

Hip hop has truly become a global phenomenon, just check out the Rap Map (yeah I know that pretty much all of the locations are in America, but it’s a start!). It has crossed regional, cultural and language barriers, and has taken on a life of its own as people from around the world add their own unique flavor to it.

I grew up with Hip Hop, and I’ve always been curious about the scenes in other countries and how it sounds. Especially in terms of the language. If I can’t understand what they’re saying, I can’t judge the lyrics in terms of the use of metaphors and complex wordplay and whatnot; I can only go off of how it sounds. This makes the MC’s personality, flow, and delivery so important and is an interesting flip to how we usually rate rappers. I’ve always wondered how foreign fans of super lyrical rappers like Eminem and Nas can relate if they don’t speak English, but I think it’s in part because of the ‘coolness’ associated with English rap and their mainstream success in America, but I digress.

So post any dope links or videos with some international flavor on it. I’ll start.

It’s always a trip to hear rap in other languages. These were really dope, I never know where to look for European rap.

This is another Japanese song featuring a guest verse from Kanye!

Epik
High from Korea is also pretty good. He’s fluent in both Korean and English, and on this song (the worldwide version) he raps in English: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OkiGO7u-6w

Rize is a band that mixes punk with rap. The singer’s flow on this song is really good. He’s even done shows with the Beastie Boys in Tibet and has gone on tour with the Kottonmouth Kings in the US.
