How do YOU get in that creative mood? (Back to the forum)

I know this thread is full of rappers. We all know it can be difficult to write if you’re just not in the mood. Is there anything that you do in particular to get you there, or do you just wait for inspiration to hit you? |

I feel the most creative in the early mornings when its nice and quiet. I also listen to a large variety of music to inspire my bars. |

Masturbation. Lots of it. But for realz, not sure. It just kind of happens, though it seems to happen a lot when I’m lying in my bed trying to go to sleep. It’s actually kind of annoying. Most of the time, it’s super late and I want to go to sleep, but I end up getting up to write whatever it is down because I don’t want to lose it. |

I feel you guys. I’m just curious cause I got writer’s block right now. Shit, when I’m feeling creative and write late at night, what seems perfect at 2, seems damn near terrible the next day. |

You gotta develop your own ritual, but these are usually components of my writing: -Drugs. This is not to say that I can’t write sober, this is not to say that you should ever think you can’t write sober, this is not to say that some people can even work while they’re on drugs (we all know that one dude who comes through the studio but always just burns and doesn’t record his shit). All that said, I find that the urge to write (and the type of idea I need to act on it) hits more when I’m intoxicated. -Night. This is because A) I’m usually active at night, B) It makes it easier to do drugs, and C) At night I have a lot of feelings sometimes and when I do it helps to write them out. -Motion. This I know for a fact is just some shit I’ve always been on: I, personally, cannot create if I’ve been sitting in place for too long. Or more accurately, I can’t stay in one place for too long while I’m creating. Writing bars I pace around the room & do shit like that, or I write while I’m walking. -Not stopping. This is advice I’d give everybody. Once I get into a groove of writing things, I don’t stop writing until something prevents me from going on. Do the same. Also, learn more and more to accept those weird little ideas that just beam into your brain from Pluto and write off them. |

That half dream-half awake state right before real sleep..keep a note book by the bed Other than that, I’m basically on the same shit Caia on…The biggest thing for me is just to keep goin. I will write a bunch of bullshit until somehow I find a grove and start building something I can use. I feel like this is true for a lot of different types of writing. As far is musical inspiration in particular…the best thing for me is to listen to something completely out of the ordinary. Whether writing, playing an instrument, putting together a beat…shake things up and you’ll find somethin. I’ll watch a black and white movie if nothing else helps..something inspires me from that time period |

That’s my problem. That half dream subconscious state is where I get AMAZING ideas. But when I awake, suddenly… GONE. Even if I had a notebook by the bed, the idea is gone in a flash, and I am unable to retrieve it. BUT I KNEW IT WAS AMAZING. I need to learn to meditate or ANYTHING to get me into that state long enough to consciously create something incredible. |

My inhibitions and doubts just disappear when I’m half-awake. Kinda creepy. |

Oh God, I hate writer’s block. I can imagine how you feel. My best advice for that is to just start writing. It doesn’t matter how terrible it is. If you’re having trouble even starting, just write shit down, and I mean shit, since that’s what it’ll probably be. As for leaving off, the best advice I’ve heard was from Earnest Hemingway. It was something along the lines of stop when you’ve reached a point where it makes sense to, but only when you know what you’re going to do next. |

I appreciate you guys, haha. My USUAL ritual is to listen to a favorite artists early albums and mixtapes. There’s that kind of raw feeling that comes out of those records. It encourages me that my favorites were at the same spot in life that I’m at now. MAYBE I’ll get there some day. That train of thought always gets me going. But it’s always nice to draw from other ideas and rituals. And yeah, if I’m not sober, I can’t get anything done. I always want to stop once I feel there’s nothing left to say, but I hate having unfinished lyrics. |

I either go to an art gallery or listen to classical music. Basically other forms of poetic art get me in the mood to write. Also the City of New York makes me want to write. The energy and history of that place get me in a writing mood.

For me, I’m like about to go to sleep, listening to music from my favorite artists, ACROSS ALL genres. I listen to Eminem, Elvis, Creed, Breaking Benjamin, 2Pac, B.I.G, this new up and coming rapper Anilyst, among others. I listen to the lines and usually derive from one of those lines that I really like. And just start freestyling accapellic till I get a nice flow going, then I go and start working a beat to the lyrics. And it all just comes together. I like to do it at night because I’m a night person, I do everything at night. Not only that, but later at night, as you get more tired, emotions are easier to access and much harder to control and keep inside. They tend to pour out at this time, it’s a great time to write honestly. That is, if you can stay up late enough to do so. |

The last few nights I’ve been just digging through random songs in my iTunes until I find something that would make a good sample. I cut it and load it into my iPod (which I make beats on) and then just leave it. And then when I do get some kind of inspiration/vibe for a certain beat I just find the right sample and use it in whatever way works. For writing lyrics, I get ideas for these huge concept albums. I’ll think of a title, a few different concepts that work with it and think of ideas for songs. This is all in my head at this point. Then I’ll write a song from that idea and that’s usually where it ends. I have a bunch of ideas for mixtapes/EPs/albums that haven’t been written yet. Someday. I always get really inspired at like 12AM when I have school the next morning. It’s really inconvenient but I never end up regretting staying up til 2 writing shit. |

I’m inspired by me. Very self-centered lifestyle. I’m just saying that because if I said I live to help other people it wouldn’t be taken seriously In all seriousness, my biggest inspiration is just the present… right now. |

What gets me writing (well, used to) is I would drive to a local supermarket or mall and park in the lot and just sit there for hours on end listening to music, away from my computer, phone etc other distractions and just write using strangers as inspiration. Sometimes though I rock back and forth on my couch with my hands on my head just saying random words that rhymed, everything around me shuts off, my friend recorded me doing it once and it was weird as fuck to watch. |
