FUTURISTIC ASS TRAP BEAT
Lupe needs to read this.
Everything is this blog post is exactly how I feel about Lupe at this point. Enough is enough.
I understand Lasers was a huge letdown and Food and Liquor II (Some of ya’ll really exaggerated it’s quality.) wasn’t exactly the most popular thing in the world, but I feel like we put impossible standards on Lupe kinda like Nas with Illmatic.
Of course he deserves blame for recent material he’s put out. With the production it’s clear to me Lupe has a different taste with instrumentals then we’re accustomed to. I remember him saying Hip-Hop was like his 4th or 6th favorite genre. He loves to write, but you can see part of his musical seance isn’t entirely our standard in terms of instrumentals. Lupe is changing and I think whether for the good or the worse is in terms of opinions. Production is a matter of taste anyway.
As for the preachiness, I think in some way’s I understand and in some ways I feel like he’s just banging a hammer on my head. For the positive I can understand why for simple reasons. A lot of the things “conscious” rappers talk about still go on. It’s not like you show your kid “Changes” and the worlds suddenly a better place. He feels strongly about these messages and you can see he cares about people’s lives and shows strong emotion towards his opinions, beliefs, facts, ETC.
With the negative, I find that it’s not that Lupe has lost his creative fire. More so that he’s just having less fun in rapping. When he was young he was talking about Anime , robots, comic books, the hood and the positive topics he covers and I could relate to all of those things and so could other people. His flow also feels more lax and even lazy at times. I understand in “Go To Sleep”, but in “Form Follows Function” where Lupe has some great verses, but just feels kinda lax and uninspired.
Also more on the preachiness, Lupe used to do this but he wouldn’t just be like “Hey this is bad, don’t do this that’s bad” like he’s a parent. He used to let us figure out the morals and understandings of his art like all great literature.
All in all Lupe will always be one of my favorite artists, but I think we need to see where he’s going with his approach on what ever decides to put out. On another note, I feel like him getting rid of FNF was one of the worst things that happened to him. He’d really benefit from some features. It feels like as time went by he got more isolated from other rappers, producers, ETC.
So ya those are my thought’s on Lupe right now, he’ll always have his lyricism because that never fades, but I feel like people don’t feel him right now because of his other forms of skill.
I enjoyed F&L II. I understand the hate on Lasers, and even his two mixtapes, but if he kept the same sound through all these years people will complain about him not changing. When he changes people hate it. Happens with so many artist, for example Eminem. After the mess that was Encore, on Relapse he started to change his voice and sound. Slim Shady has always played a big role in his album but the whole Relapse album was entirely Slim besides a few tracks. Many didn’t like it. He did the same on Recovery, except completely diss missing Slim Shady all together. Few artist have ever been able to make the transition, The Beatles and Pac are a great example of that. Being a artist is hard, and keeping your core fan base while bringing in new fans is even more difficult. To each their own.
People change but damn I miss the old Lupe.
casually listens to Friend Of The People and FnL2
Hes just not having fun anymore…
F & L II was just alright to me. Not mind-blowing or anything but not completely terrible. Also, as you said T_and_L, his preachiness is beginning to become insufferable. Like I said in a post a while back he’s become the Mr. Mackey of the rap game. But really it’s the shenanigans outside of his music that have really started to turn me off from Lupe. I understand wanting to get your message out but the whole deal at the inauguration was straight disrespectful to his fans. Not to mention threatening to retire every five minutes is come off as shallow attention seeking. I love Lupe and I want to see him succeed, but I can’t help but feel that his career is going in a downward spiral.
Well all we can do is hope and pray that he makes good music.
“is it too much to ask for him to tone it down for a bit while he’s supposed to be honoring the president’s reelection?”
What a dumbass question to ask. Obviously, YES, that was too much to ask. It was too much to ask of Lupe Fiasco to remain mute in “honor” of our glorious president, who sends robot-controlled airplanes to drop bombs on brown babies.
Good for Lupe.
^^ thank you @efemjay
Thats who he is, thats who he always has and always will be, you want him to change? realize how pathetic that sounds. the man has his beliefs and just because he doesnt have that big of a following he should stop the “bullshit” right? smh. if he did the ingratiation thing years ago ya’ll would have praised him.
as far as his music.. enough with expecting It Was Written. I dont get how people can bash his music while accepting other “artists” that i wont begin to name off cause i dont want some kid who is quick on the trigger to blurt out
btw…IMO, Lasers was only trash if you expected F&L 2. it was a DECENT album and his message/personality was still there..
Different is never good, good is only what we pick
You ain’t got a hit, unless it sounds like these did
first i was sad someone posted this, then i was still sad because i realized it was the truth and it was a necessary blow to Lupe stans everywhere..
“if he did the ingratiation thing years ago ya’ll would have praised him”
Nope, pretty sure my opinion of that debacle was based upon Lupe’s pretentiousness, not on the level of popularity he has. If he did it a few years ago it might have bought him more time to live up to his criticisms, but that’s all.
“btw…IMO, Lasers was only trash if you expected F&L 2. it was a DECENT album and his message/personality was still there..”
Lasers wasn’t trash but it was severely watered-down. Yes it’s better than what most rappers come up with but it was still a major disappointment, especially after he made it seem like he won the label battle.
Since we always compare Lupe to well….Lupe I feel like he might never break that chain that he’s hanging on. Nobody makes another “The Cool” or “Food and Liquor”.
I liked FL2. Lol, I even liked Lasers.
Lasers got my attention and I looked into more of Lupe’s songs. Then I realized I had been listening to him for a while.
But don’t judge me, back then I used to just listen to the song and not care about the artist much.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t learn of Lupe until Lasers came out. “Wut?” you ask? I know, but it’s funny, because of the watered down material in that, and not as complex probably as some of those messages were, but still showed good messages (at least in my opinion) I found a connection with his music. In finding out who he was and how I liked his songs, I went and listened to more of his older songs. I get that you know, his songs aren’t the same level of skill and what not, and maybe that’s because he’s what everybody here seems to be saying, but is it possible hes dumbing down his songs for newer fans who couldn’t see what he was saying in previous songs and albums? And as for his taste in his instrumentals, I feel as though many people after finding the best album(s) done by a rapper, that becomes the kind of instrumentals we expect. But I don’t see why people are so hardcore elitist on the instrumentals, I feel like you should be open to new kinds not because you necessarily like it, but because it’s the artist’s music. If you don’t like the way his instrumentals are going and such, don’t listen to it. I personally do, but I’m weird, I am able to work with any kind of instrumental. That’s just me though, but I can fuck with his old music, and his new. Lastly, as for what he’s doing outside of music, I really don’t entirely follow, I don’t do that with any artists really. Why? Because I find if you follow someone outside of their music, it could take away from what you enjoy in their music. I mean, if you didn’t know, or wasn’t aware of what was going on with him outside of music, and just focused solely on his music, you’d probably not be hating on it or disliking it so much. That’s just my opinion though, I don’t know what y'all think, but that’s how I feel about it. I don’t hate Lupe or his music, I personally love it. But I’m not stanning him either. I think he’s just approaching music in a different way.
