Hip Hop Debates (Just a Thought)
Being a member of this site for quite a while, I have known that threads that compare two rappers get denounced and violently raped by downvotes.
But personally, I like comparing artists. It’s kind of like what those guys do on ESPN where they compare every facet of two athletes of a certain sport. I like analyzing artists because it is very thought-provoking and makes me want to listen to both the artists more.
Unfortunately, these threads aren’t made very well. Their thread is merely something like
Title: Nas vs Tupac
Body: Nas is better IMO. Illmatic was a great album. Tupac is overrated because he died.
NO CONTENT WHATSOEVER!!!
And then the posts are either people saying that both artists have different styles or people just giving their opinions.
They are missing the whole point of a comparison thread.
A comparison thread shouldn’t just be people giving their opinion and then backing it up with very little evidence. A comparison thread should work something like a debate. You make your argument and then yo back it up with a shit load of evidence. When you say you like Nas better than Tupac, you can’t just say “Illmatic” or “Ether”. You have annotated lyrics to your disposal. Use Them. Say why “Illmatic” is better than “All Eyez on Me” (or the other way if you differ in opinion) or why “Ether” is better than “Hit ‘Em Up” (or the other way if you differ in opinion).
Also, you can compare artists with different artists with different styles. For example, you can compare Lupe Fiasco and 50 Cent. You don’t have to compare their styles then, but rather how well they are ay executing that style. How good is 50 Cent at being a gangsta rapper versus How good is Lupe Fiasco at being a conscience-minded rapper.
But, if you’re like me, you would be too lazy to do this unless there is a reward of some kind. If you’re like me, you wouldn’t make essay long arguments to support your idea unless you get something back. This is why I’ve thought of a new idea for this website called “Hip Hop Debates” (you can go ahead and expand this to other musical genres as well. Or fuck it, why musical genres, why not any genre in general?).
What you do is that you challenge somebody with differing opinions. For example, one person thinks Canibus won, another person thinks that Eminem won. You put them together and let them make long arguments that you either time (if audio/video) or limit the number of words (if text). Then an impartial judge chooses whose argument was more convincing. The winner gets award in a bunch of Rap IQ or a free T-shirt (whatever…I don’t give a single fuck).
I hope that this makes people try to be more knowledgeable of Hip Hop. Just a thought.
I’m Krypt and I approve this thread!
No, but in all seriousness, this is probably one of the greatest ideas ever. I’m a very debate kinda person, I love fighting or arguing, I like winning and knowing I won. I think the idea of a prize would be totally sick as well! I totally support this and cosign to the fucking 1000th percent! Literally, if this gets done, I am certain people would become a lot more knowledgeable and that people would also enjoy these threads and they’d be much more thought out! This is how you turn often shitty threads into great threads, with ideas like these!
Cosign the fuck out of this
I love the idea, but the impartial judge part is tricky. Who’s going to be the judge? I mean if you get rap professors or whatever, everyone has an opinion. It’ll work for obvious factual wins, but in debates like nas v tupac, a lot of the evidence provided will get really subjective. Do you really want to have one person decide in a situation like that? And besides, if this site catches on, then it will be flooded with debates and opinions. Then how are the judges supposed to keep track? You’ll have to get more people in, and that would result in a drop in the impartiality and quality of the judging.
I think the outcome of debates should be decided by a system of points. In one debate, each piece should be awarded certain credibility points based on the number of convincing points that were made. The total number of points a side has will decide who won. These points should be awarded by the rapgenius editors.
NUWguy, you could use a judge who doesn’t like that particular rapper silly. It will provide an impartial judge man.
Lol, I forgot about this genius idea of mine….I guess I should let Maboo know about this.
Do think a debate league or Hip-Hop roundtable could bring some nice discussions to this forum.
Maybe a weekly thing.
I was actually thinking about a similar idea to this. I was going to basically steal the setup from another forum I’m on. As far a judging, you get like 5 people to be judges and whichever argument gets more votes wins.
@arobie…yeah, like a Supreme Court Trial. We get 9 judges and if one person gets at least 5 votes they win.
Also, if this plan goes any further, then I’m going to need some moderators and some of the people (or just a person) who program this website to help out. There is no way that a white hat would be able to edit this website to the Hip Hop Debate and there is also no way for a white hat to award IQ points (AND i’M NOT BUYING T-SHIRTS FOR Y'ALL! I’M just 16 AND I’M BROKE!).
