The 2011 Rap Genius Awards
2011 RAP GENIUS AWARDS
Last week the votes came in, a lot more than expected I might add, and we’ve come up with the results. This was our first time doing the voting/polling and award naming, so if anything seems a little cliche or cheesy, it’s because it is and we just don’t know better. Thanks to everyone that voted, including the guys that voted twice (or third and fourth times for some people) — your repeat votes weren’t counted.
I’d also like to cover my ass a little and say don’t kill me for being the messenger. The winners and runner up’s were all chosen by the votes and no personal opinions by me were taken for the final outcome.
I will be posting the awards individually, for formatting reasons. Feel free to discuss in between my posts, hate, love, suggest, puke, pass out… All is fair here. Maybe next year we’ll do this live and the artists can accept their awards in person (HA). You’ll notice that I’m including the winner, the runner up and a pie chart that shows the categories top 5. The percentages don’t reflect all of the votes taken, only the total of what the top 5 mustered up. (ex. 500 votes were taken, the top 5 collectively earned 250 of those votes, the percentages in the charts represent those 250). I didn’t want to have one massive ass chat that showed every vote taken because some categories had a score of different solo votes. So if it’s confusing to you, don’t worry, the whole thing is fixed.
I’m going to be posting quite a few photos here, so please refrain from posting anymore than necessary. In fact, just because the thread could get a little bogged down with picture links, I will be deleting any and all photos, GIFs, videos, links, etc.
Award winners will be sent a plate of Harold’s Chicken by me, so if you have any of the artist’s addresses, private message me.
Ah shit! It’s about to go DOWN! (Kevin Hart voice)
Something tells me that, Soulja Boy- Zan with that Lean will be mentioned in this list.
Hopefully it isn’t.
^ 6x didn’t do a singles poll, because that was already done. So you’re in the clear this time.
BEST NEW ARTIST…
Really though, did you expect anyone else? He basically swept this damn category and we clearly love him here at Rap Genius; not to say he doesn’t deserve any of the praise we give him. Because just about anyone here can back up their argument as to why Kendrick is deserving of what we give him. He had a few mixtapes in years past, but he definitely exploded this year with Section.80 getting so much critical acclaim and praise from hip hop heads all over. According to Wikipedia (the only absolute), Kendrick’s favorite rapper and main inspiration is Tupac Shakur, whom he dedicates at least ten minutes to at each of his shows. Notorious, can you confirm this for us?
Runner Up: ASAP Rocky
Bonus: V-Nasty received a total of 1 votes.
Wow! Is that a fucking pie chart?!?! That shit is bomb, yo.
COMEBACK ARTIST OF THE YEAR…
This one was another run away, if not the biggest case of that out of all of these awards. Common got so many votes for this one. But, really, who else really made a good comeback? After the disaster that Universal Mind Control was, Common released The Dreamer/The Believer. I’m not saying it’s the best of his career, but it definitely deserved to be on the year end “Album of the Year” discussions. In fact, we voted it 4th best of 2011. If Nas.com actually does get released this year, Common may very well have another “Album of the Year” contender on his hands, as long as he doesn’t revert to his “Everywhere” days.
Runner Up: Nas
Bonus: Drake received a total of 1 votes.
BEST COLLABORATION OF THE YEAR…
There were a couple of pictures of these two to go off of, but this one was way, way better than all of the rest. Regardless, this song really is good. Two of hip hop’s heavyweights collaborating on the same track is good for everyone. In retrospect, there were some great contenders for this award, “Niggas in Paris” is so outrageously fun, “Make My” is (which I voted for) is amazing, Gucci and V-Nasty actually had quite a few votes. But, none of which outvoted the winner. “Ghetto Dreams” was the first single off of The Dreamer/The Believer, got released in July of last year and had everyone wanting more, everyone being me, because I didn’t ask anyone else. If Nas.com has the same overall vibe as this track, we’re in for a treat. Support good music and listen to this shit. Seriously
Bonus: The Shady 2.0 Cypher received a total of 1 votes.
MOST OVERRATED ALBUM OF THE YEAR…
I won’t lie, this one puzzled me a bit. I wasn’t really finding anyone that rated this album high (60 on MetaCritic) so I couldn’t figure out how it was OVERrated. But then it hit me; like a ton of bricks… Even a 60/100 is TOO HIGH. This album is that bad. Some good frat party beats with a hodgepodge of miserable similes and metaphors that rarely pertain to the song’s subject matter. Sorry Wayne.
Runner Up: Watch the Throne by The Throne
MOST UNDERRATED ALBUM OF THE YEAR…
Both albums received the same amount of votes to form the first ever Rap Genius Awards Split Decision. All 6’s and 7’s actually ended up on quite a few year end lists, as well as Tech himself, so I wasn’t exactly sold on the idea that the album was underrated. As it stands, it has an 81/100 on MetaCritic (and a 4.30/5 by me!), so if people must be thinking that the album deserved to be higher, or maybe slept on… Shit. It’s slept on.
Camp however didn’t receive the same glowing reviews and didn’t make many year end lists. As far as it’s “sleeper” identity, sure, I suppose people aren’t talking about it as much as say Section.80, but it had enough buzz to get recognized if it were really that great. Still though, voters thought that Camp deserved to be ranked higher on lists than it was receiving, our very own RG list had it at 8th of 2011…
Runner Up: W.A.R. by Pharoahe Monch
Bonus: Money$Team (overall) received a total of 197 votes.
Damn I freaking love this, I’ve been refreshing this for like the last 4 hours, thank you 6 stacks for doing all of this for us
I feel embarrassed and apologize from the bottom of my heart. The above pie chart states that Phonte’s Charity Strikes received 16% of the Top 5 vote. The album’s actual name is Charity Starts at Home and definitely needs to be heard by everyone. As robertF so kindly puts it in the chat:
Charity starts at home is easilyyyy
the msot underrated
fucking hell mayne
Phonte shoulda won that
Again, I feel ashamed for that mistake and actually considered deleting that post and recreating the chart. Regardless, the album is actually really really good. It has some awesome production from 9th Wonder, and it actually has a 91/100 on MetaCritic. Check it out and I do apologize for the mistake. I feel like a 4th grader.
I didn’t even know Phonte released an album this year, but I’m gonna check it out for sure
MOST DISAPPOINTING ALBUM…
By awarding this “most disappointing”, it implies that it was supposed to be the best thing out last year. And that claim wasn’t hyped up by anybody by Wayne himself. So again, I really don’t understand how the general consensus was that this was going to be a good album to begin with. But then again, I hated C3 whereas everyone thought that was mediocre to good. I guess I understand that an album that debuts at #1 and sells just under a mil in it’s opening week should be expected to be pretty damned good, which this obviously wasn’t. So, have at it you savages. Maybe next time don’t cry when the next Lil Wayne album is equally as bad, because you’ll have known better.
Bonus: Goblin by Tyler, the Creator received only 3 votes.
