Discussing the rap stats and the culture of hip hop (2009 & drugs edition)
K, so I was using the new rapstats function, and I noticed something interesting. From 2008 to 2009, mention of most hard drugs declined while mentions of weed increased a shit tonne.
My hypothesis for this is that 2009 was really the beginning of that “internet mixtape” era where we saw rappers like drake cudi & wiz khalifa come into fruition and they didnt have to rap about selling or doing those hard drugs
is it really only that tho? could it have to do with the overall culture of the american/english people where marijuana and its legalization started becoming more accepted into society? idk, what do u think
Gonna have to say that Canibus played a crucial part in the popularity of Cannabis.
Both theories make sense, I can never really recall hearing of rappers strictly considered “Weed Rappers” until only a few years ago, and from a societal standpoint the views on weed and it’s usage have undergone a massive change over the past few years as well, so it makes sense.
Dope fell off so much because it fell out of favor as a slang word. Now people only say “dope” because it’s vintage.
Crack fell off because (not as many) rappers nowadays pushed it like they did in the 90’s. Weed blew up in popularity and nothing else seemed to change that much
Purple drank is a lot harder than its given credit for, worth bearing in mind
