Just a Theory: Friday Night Lights is a concept project?
This is only a theory:
Though out Friday Night Lights, there is a story. Probably the last game of the semester is coming up and this is probably the first chance Cole has to play. Long read….but I’ll explain even further…
1. Friday Night Lights (Intro)
The mixtape opens up with Cole dreaming. We can deduce that Cole has been promised to be put into the game and he’s generally feeling that he’s been waiting for so long just to play. This can be seen when the final words on the intro are: “What good is being ‘The One’ when you’re the only one that knows it?”
Now he’s ready to prove himself.
2. Too Deep for the Intro
Cole wakes up knowing what he has to do today. However, instead of feeling more excited, he’s parcially comfortable. He feels that this is his introduction to something that will turn out great in the end. When you think about the hook this is what I get…
Time to save the world
Where in the world is all the time?
So many things I still don’t know
So many times I’ve changed my mind
Guess I was born to make mistakes
But I ain’t scared to take the weight
So when I stumble off the path
I know my heart will guide me back
Apparently Cole’s team has been challenged quite a bit lately and this game, being the final (or maybe against a rival team), means the world to him. He’s gone back and forth in his mind if he still even wants to play ball. When the hook says “Guess I was born to make mistakes”, Cole probably made a mistake earlier in the season and he’s been on the bench ever since. Now that he’s coming off, this is his final chance.
3. Before I’m Gone
Cole’s thinking that he has to do something before this semester is over, and he’s got to do something to leave his name. In the third verse, Cole is quoting some of the people in his city:
Them old niggas sayin’
Cole the wrong one bringin’ the city shine
All he ever doin’ is paintin’ pictures of crime
Tellin’ stories of pain, paintin’ pictures of dope
Bitch if you listenin' I’m paintin’ pictures of hope
Maybe this mistake that he made that was refrence in Too Deep for the Intro was something violently related. Or Cole might have done something off court that had got him suspended. Of course this might be a situation where was doing something right but handled it the wrong way. He probably tried to convince the people to no avail, which is why he said “Bitch if you listenin, I’m paintin pictures of hope”.
4. Back To The Topic (Freestyle)
We can deduce this to be where he and his friends or team mates are freestyling in the locker room or in the cafeteria.
5. You Got It (feat. Wale)
On the way back to class or leaving the gym, Cole and Wale (probably playing a team mate) spot some girls that are looking rather cute. Cole might have been talking about her during the end of his Freestyle on the end of the previous track. She might come back at another time during the tape.
During this track, Cole is comparing himself to a veteran in the game, Nas. This can be a inner monologue where Cole is thinking that he has a long way to go before he will be on his level. This can support the theory that Cole is freestyling in the locker room. His other teammates might have been comparing him to an great player. These thoughts still being in Cole’s mind, he might still be thinking about it.
7. Enchanted (feat. Omen)
This is the moment right before the game. Cole is contemplating all the things that let him to the moment of being suspended.
Pull up to the club where the boys went too
See that yellow tape and the boys in blue
Cole might be comparing the club to the arena where he’s playing. Now there are police ready because they know that Cole is playing and they are trying to avoid a replay of the situation that happened earlier the season. At the end of the track…he’s feeling more of a “I gotta do my best” emotion.
8. Blow Up
This game has started. Now Cole is doing everything he can to prove everyone wrong. This is most likely the reason that this is the “song for his haters”. Just think of Cole like this…
After the game, Cole meets up with a girl that he used to talk 12th grade. He spits a little game and at the end of the track, he and this girl end up having sex. Cole doesn’t have any long term expectation with this girl but she’s looking really good right now.
10. In the Morning (feat. Drake)
After Cole wakes up, he wants some more. Probably something to get rid of that morning wood tho…Now that he’s gotten what he’s wanted from this girl and heads his own way…
The emotion from this song could be coming from the fact that Cole had sex with another girl. We can’t be certain that the girl is from You Got It or Higher or just a girl that Cole never engaged with thats not on the tape. He’s feeling as tho there is another side to him that does good things and bad things.
How could I fuck her raw? And I just met the ho
My dick took over it ain’t never felt this wet before
Since he’s says that he just met this girl, it must not be the girl from Higher. He might have left after having sex with the girl from Higher and fell asleep at this other girls crib and had sex with her in the morning. But hey who’s gonna do all that…it’s a little of a stretch
12. The Autograph
This could be Cole walking home and while he’s walking some of the people that doubt him come up and ask him for an autograph. Although he’s glad that they support him, he sees them as fake because they didn’t even have the courtesy to support him until the game last night (or buy his music).
13. Best Friend (feat. Aaliyah)
Now all of the things that Cole has done with this girl from In the Morning has gotten to his girl. Now she’s feeling that she needs to go live with her friend because of his dogging ways. At the end, Aaliyah (a.k.a his girl for the song) is feeling as though she is breaking up with him and he’s feeling as though that has no one else to hold him down…
14. Cost Me A Lot
Just feeling one of the stages of breaking up. Cole’s feeling as though he doesn’t need anyone. Yet, he’s doing things because he feels there’s something he’s gotta prove something. He’s probably thinking that he’s gotta show his girl that she should regret her decision of breaking up with him instead of feeling vice versa. You think he learned his lesson?
15. Premeditated Murder
He’s now feeling the emotions that he should’ve felt in the last song. This song could also be a inner monologue. When he opens up with the questions:
Am I changing right before your eyes?Annotate
Becoming someone you don’t recognize
He regrets letting the money and the fame from this last game go to his head. Feeling that he would change it all if he could
16. Home for the Holidays
You guessed it, Cole went home to Fayettenam for the Holidays. He’s going around the city with a nostalgic feeling. (Probably) trying to get over his girl; He meets up with a girl he used to talk to.
17. Loves Me Not
Now the thoughts about his girl are flooding back to his mind and he’s reminiscing of the times he had with her before he was famous and seperate from her. He even references Aaliyah in this song…
I think it’s a little ironic
If I hit another chick its gonna bruise you
Shit, staring out the window of this plane
Thinking if it crash, I’ll never see your ass again
He’s been trying to get in touch with her and now she’s ignoring him. He’s starting to understand how she feels. And while all of this is going on, ole girl from track 10 is sendin him naked pics or “flicks”
18. See World
In this song, it’s not really related to this story overall, however it is a powerful sentiment.
(R.I.P Shaniya Davis)
Now Cole is leaving home. He’s hoping that his success will never tarnish. However, he doesn’t want to be seen more than just a man. He wasn’t perfect. He hopes that when he dies that he is reincarnated as boy, that will relieve his younger days, and will keep his demons burried. This is to hopefully to not make the same mistakes that he’s made now at this point.
Looking for trouble is a bonus to the tape…I couldn’t think of it being relevant to the overall story other than Cole coming back to the school and as the next semester starts, he and his team are looking to take over the game…This could mean the game of rap or basketball.
The only reason I didn’t include it is because I thought it would’ve been the biggest stretch of all of the ones that I probabaly made during this theory.
What do you guys think?
Its not a concept to me but more of a recurring thematic/tone.
Like in his previous mixtapes also Come Up and Warm-Up
Damn, I’ll give you props for thinking so deep into this. I don’t think it was a concept project though.
It makes sense i mean Cole loved basketball and the cover his team/girl references
i always thought there was a story of him being cut into the mixtape but i couldnt put it together
implying that anyone listened to this trash mixtape
^yeah cuz no one did
it’s a great mixtape but this might be a reach. props to you for taking it this far though
His mixtapes are inspired by the theme of Kanye’s first three albums.
