For a classic album to be made there needs to be absolutely zero filler in the album. Most of the time this is achieved with keeping the number of tracks and the length of tracks to an absolute minimum to make sure only the best cuts made in studio finally make it on the album. There are rare exceptions where rappers are able to have a large amount of tracks and length and still make you want to listen from front to back. Let’s count solos, duos, and groups as three different categories. I’m going to personally ignore double LPs because obviously those are going to longer and must of them suck anyway.

So, what’s the longest hip hop that is considered a classic? The first one I thought of off top was Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… which is 18 tracks (2 skits) deep for a total of 73:25.

Longest duo is Outkast’s Aquemini at 74:47.

Longest group I belied is De La Soul’s second album De La Soul Is Dead at 73:30.

Illadelph Halflife is 78:45.

Mecca and the Soul Brother: 77:23

I disagree with your premise. Plenty of classic albums have at least one bum track on them, including Aquemini.

@SameOldShawn I’m not disagreeing with you here but I’m just curious what song you think is ‘bum’ on Aquemini? Also I feel we should label these albums as ‘Masterpieces’ not ‘Classics’. There’s more classics in hip-hop than masterpieces. Either way though I co-sign Mecca & The Soul Brother.

Not in my definition Shawn, not in my definition.

I don’t know if Big K.R.I.T.’s Return of 4eva is considered a classic yet, but that’s 76:15

Duo, Moment of Truth — Gang Starr: 78:26

Group, The Score — Fugees: 73:24

^ (longest of each category in my library) ^

Malik you cray. Every album does have atleast one thing you skip (name 5 albums you don’t have to skip a song on).

@victor: Have you ever really listened to “Mamacita” or whatever the hell that terrible song is called? Another fine example of a classic w/skippable tracks is Straight Outta Compton. Was anyone ever like, “‘Something 2 Dance 2’ is my JAM?” Doesn’t make the record any less classic…

There ya go

@Ape

GZA — Liquid Swords
Madvillain — Madvillainy
Mobb Deep — The Infamous
Clipse — Hell Hath No Fury
Wu Tang Clan — Enter the Wu Tang: 36 Chambers

Yeah but Madvillainy is like 45 minutes, Illadelph Halflife is almost double that and it’s definitely a classic. It’s arguably the Roots best album.

Cosign Dilla on The Cold Vein though, that’s almost as long.

Only thing you would skip are the skits.

132.18 min

R U Still Down?
102.40 min

@CandyJack
All Eyez On Me is one of my favorite albums of all time, and I admit there’s at least 2 filler songs on there.

Clipse had a classic? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

The Cool i never skip any tracks on it, i skip a few on Food and Liquor

@Redmaster

Hell Hath No Fury was one the most well received albums of the 2000s across the board. Where have you been? Next you’ll be saying “you listened to We Got it 4 Cheap Vol. 2?”

Clipse might actually have 2 classics/borderline classics tbh.

Hell Hath No Fury & Lord Willin'

77:58

Binary Star — Waterworld — 73:03

That’s funny. I’ve heard both of those “classics”. Man, the bar sure had dropped.

Waterworld isn’t a classic, Masters of the Universe is. Much better sound quality, I think they made Waterworld with like $200.

The filler songs aren’t enough to take them down to 78 and all of the other albums being posted here…

Waka Flocka’s Flockaveli @ 71:59 dis whole album iz dope

@1st element: not to disrespect the dead, but that pseudo-reggae track is pretty bogus.

Classic albums can have filler

Some of these albums are garbage. Strait up. MF Grimm’s bullshit quadruple album? really? A CLASSIC!? Don’t make me laugh dood.

Another cool thread would be shortest classic album.

Which album had the least amount of time to make an impression, and still went down in history?

^ Illmatic.

^ 45 minutes is long?

^ No, I posed a new question in my last post.

@Malik, make a new thread based on my question or I think I’m gonna. You cool with that?

Feel free to make the thread Ernest.

Oh damn my bad Ernest. In that case then yes Madvillainy would be a short classic.

@ Below The Heavens

Blu Collar Worker is filler to me. And Juicin' Dranks is just a sub-par song.

I agree with SameOldShawn; even Stillmatic had Braveheart Party.

The blueprint. every song on the album is great exept girls, girls, girls part two which is average.

^Was a hidden track as well
