What are the best over-ear headphones for $400 or under?

I’m looking for some over-ear headphones that can take the hammering beat of songs like 99 Problems with ease.
They need to be under $400, and preferably noise-cancelling.
Any opinions?

Please don’t suggest Beats Solo/Mixr.

Get you some Skullcandy Skullcrushers. They’re only about 120.

Sony MDR-XB500s. I have them. Bigger and better bass than Beats Studio, and much clearer mids and highs. They sound amazing with an equalizer. $80, but you can find them for $50 or $60 on Amazon and other websites. Not notice canceling though.

The Sony MDR-XB1000s are upgrades to the 500s. $300, but they sound infinitely better than Beats Pro. Crazy bass.

Get some quality Studio Monitor headphones from Guitar Center — nothing endorsed by a rapper or intended to be fashionable (i.e., Skull Candy). The sound quality of those fashion headphones is atrocious. You’ll never find a mixing engineer using any of those. I have Sony MDR-7506 Professional Studio Monitor headphones — they cost $100 and they were about a zillion times more accurate and better-sounding than the alternatives.

You must have never bought a nice pair of Skull Candies. I have some MDR-V600’s that don’t even compare to my Skull Crushers.

As a functioning audiophile, i’d strongly recommend a Sennheiser or Klipsh product, both of those being brands that center themselves around quality and price instead of marketing and profiteering.

At around 200-300, my favorite pair of on-ears are the Sennheiser HD-25s. Great audio, awesome style, and an excellent fit.

Head over to head-fi forums if you’re truly interested in finding a good pair.

My portable rig consists of westone um3x powered through a fiio e11 using an ipod nano 6g as a source
