i made this beat and i just want some feedback positive or negative i can handle it i’m a big boy :p

ps: if there are any producers out here i would also like to listen to some of you’re productions

Some thoughts on your production…

  • Is this meant to be a genre-specific beat? While in theory any melodic/rhythmic arrangement could be used for a rap song (I’m assuming that’s what this is for; why else post it in a rap forum?), I’m getting more of an electronica/pop/R&B vibe from this beat than something that’s hip-hop/rap.

If you’re going for a more hip-hop/rap vibe…

If you’re going for a more all-purpose beat

  • I’m hearing this weird dissonant/atonal quality in your melody which, while suitable for hard electronic stuff, is not good for more “mainstream” music. I think I can hear a chord progression in there but I’m not completely clear if or where my tonal center is supposed to be. Even bare-beat songs like “Look at Me Now” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot” have clear-cut tonal grounding (A minor and C# minor respectively)

  • There also isn’t anything that really excites me about your beat — yeah, I know; shit like this is subjective and esoteric and maddening, but that’s just how I feel about it. I don’t have any compulsion to headbang or spit 16 or do my best Maxwell impression over this song. But beefing up the base should help with that. Consider tweaking the melody some as well.

I hope this is somewhat useful.

i think its tight id rap over it. i got a 90s type vibe from it at the beginning for some reason so i expected some serious BOOM BAP wit the drum part but i think its creative it sounds different to me you have any other beats? id like to hear em.

@yeezytaughtyouwel thanks for the feedback i really appreciate it and its very helpful too ima use the information that you gave me and apply it on my next project

@dopedlalect i’m glad you liked it :D its the first beat i ever made but i’m working on a new one when its done i’ll upload it

ps: sorry for bad english

Damn, Yeezy really taught you well in that first comment.

Also the beat is good, but it needs some like bass to balance it in my mind. I’m not a producer, but I think it would sound better.

I’m legit fucking surprised you got any feedback at all. Nobody likes to listen to beats on here :/

I do think it needs to have a stronger boom in there, maybe a little bouncy vibe. You might want to try sidechaining the kick to your synths.

I like listening to beats on here! No one listens to raps on here!

Let’s agree that barely anybody listens to anything on here then haha.
Here’s one of my newest productions, since I have your attention.

@StephenNiday

Some thoughts on your production…

  • You’ve treated the source material well; if anything speeding up the sample makes your work more creepy and haunting than the original performance.
  • Your drum work complements the sample’s natural “ebb and flow” rather than trying to re-write it and making a mess of it. It also has sufficient kick (always important).
  • You might want to consider softening the second vocal line (e.g. the one running from 0:49-1:10). I found it a bit overpowering, especially if you or someone else plans to rap over it. If you bring down the volume on that voice, not only will you avoid the “loudness war” pitfall, but it’ll accentuate the counterpoint between voices 1 and 2 (which I think sounds really nice).

Overall I really like this beat. Nicely done.

I started sampling because Yeezy is my favorite producer. Yeezy taught me well. I’ll go back and make the modifications necessary to make it better.

i like the fact that you sample oh land and the beat is also nice

Well here’s a new beat from me
http://soundcloud.com/aap-diamond-gang/fifteen

@Rocky preciate that.
@Duba long time no see, you make it far in the tournament after round 3?
I like your beat, but your drums sound a little bit…. analog-ish? It’s hard to put a correct word on it. And they drown out the melody in the intro. I like the piano though. Smoooooove.

Here’s another beat I have up while we’re doing this. Might as well build off of this thread.

Stephen Niday my boy is holdin out on yall and im tired of him posting averagness…he’s produced wayyyyyyyyyy better beats than this….at least 30 better beats…..in fact….he produced this…..and my album…

Now that…… I like that. A lot. A lot more than the other one.

Told you lol

@Stephen Whats good fam. Yeah man I’m in the FINALS!!!!!! But your beat… I like it alot. I like the sample, its Kid Cudi right? Just at some points it kinda gets off tempo to me…but its a really cool beat! Good Shit!

Yes you did haha. I not only like the beat though. Good song overall.

Thanks gee….punchlines for days

Nah that’s a Miike Snow sample. “Animal”

And good luck in the finals man, you’re nice. BARS!

Well, Yeezy got to it. I'ma sit out the critiques

Some thoughts on “There Was a Time”

  • It’s a very mellow beat (which is nice). This could be a good “break” or contrast piece on an album with “harder” rap beats and/or subject matter.
  • It also has “radio hit” written all over it (a complement, I assure you!), and the chord progression you used (I — ii — vi — I, if my ears heard correctly; the use of ii is a nice deviation) has a lot to do with it (besides overall solid production). To be honest, you could probably edit out the vocal bits and record a pop song over this (I’m just making an observation based on what I’ve been hearing in the marketplace).
  • I want to give you some improvements, but there’s nothing here that I find particularly lacking or in need of change. Maybe someone else can give you a more thorough dressing-down.

If I were a weed man, I’d light up and just chill to this. Nicely done.

P.S. — From where was this piece sampled? (if it was)

@Psyonik

Don’t exclude yourself on my account. More feedback is better. Truly.

DO'H nevermind about the source, just saw the previous post.

Dope, it’ll be up in a second.

Rockynorris

First Impression

  • I could hear this on some abstract hip-hop related game… Maybe a horror scene in Afro Samurai.

  • I can also hear this as an intro/interlude/outro on an album with the same feel. It’s really quite ambient.

  • On the downside, as a rapper I find it hard to flow on it. As a stand-alone beat, it shines in certain areas, (like the ones I mentioned) but as a beat to rap on it doesn’t cut the… cake, because who cuts mustard?

Critiques and Tips

  • I agree with Yeezy. There doesn’t always need to be a tonal center, because hell, this is music, but a listener should at least know where you’re going. It’s imperative that you captivate the listener, whether with a melody they hate or love, at least they’ll be sure of it.

  • Rhythmically; I’d advise adding some swing into your percussion. Swing is that inexplicable “on time but off time” feel to a beat. It’s what gets heads nodding when that bangin' east coast anthem comes on, or what gets bodies moving in the club when they dance floor’s dry and people are being bashful.

  • Otherwise, I’m going to co-sign with Yeezy yet again. Try creatively tossing some low end in there. This can be done by beefing up your kick drums or tossing a spankin' ass bass in there. Bass guitar, low strings, growling synth, deep piano hits… Whatever you want, or whatever works best with the song.

Overall

Despite the lack of conventional beatmaking techniques, I still like it. I’m a huge fan of ambiance in my music, and whether or not you did it on purpose, it happened. (Happy accidents make some of the best music)

Keep it up, playa

@psyonik man thanks for the feedback really appreciate it and also thanks for the tips really helpful

“If I were a weed man, I’d light up and just chill to this. Nicely done."
Best compliment I think I’ve ever received haha.
Psyonik, would you mind leaving feedback on both of mine?

Sure Stephen, one sec

hey, if any of ya’ll wanted some rap lyrics I can hook u up….

@Abbacfeta There’s a download link to both of my beats in the description of the videos, if you want to rap on either of them.
@Yeezytaughtyouwell This is for you. Redone version of “This Was Done”

Stephen

First Impression

  • Samples. I fucking love them.
Not only that, this particular one is soulful as fuck.
If you know me, and my music, you’d know that that’s a huge plus.

  • Ambiance. Again, the ambiance when it starts is beautiful. The vocals are dope, very easy to want to spit some deep lyrics over. The sonic stage is exquisite, everything is in place and the only thing missing is the performer. Swag.

Critiques + Tips

  • I wouldn’t change much here. Again, as Yeezy said, the drums compliment the track quite nicely. The only thing is that the hook/chorus drums are a biiiiit bare, but with lyrics, it should go over largely unnoticed.

  • On vocals (the sample vocals) could use some reverb. This is more coming from a fellow producer/“hey here’s a trick” kind of thing than a “feedback from a listener” standpoint. Vocal samples + reverb = LOVE (and by love, I mean eargasm)
Trust me, it’ll do some GOOOOOOD.

Overall

I really liked this beat. It’s a real headnod, and I’d love to hear a completed song over it by an adequate artist.

Keep it movin' mang.

on a lower level but fuck it here you go

http://soundcloud.com/sohighguy/wwest Skip to 50 if the first beat dose not get you wet

Psyonik….You’re the man. I’ll take that into consideration on my next projects.
@Cray…. That shit cray. I wish you would have changed up the drums a little bit more though. Has a nice vibe to it though.
