Real Talk: 2012 Ain't Slackin'
Whether you’re a fan of mainstream material or underground shit, it’s been an awesome half of 2012 for hip hop. I know I’ve heard a few people say things on the contrary, but I’ll be goddamned if I am not overwhelmed with new shit that is noteworthy. As of today it’s June 12th, and there are still plenty of albums on the horizon. But looking back at what has been released and what is buzzing, where do you guys think all of this shit stacks up? Where do you rank whats been released this year? What’s your top 5 releases so far?
TDE is releasing good material after good material. Habits and Contradictions and #controlsystem have both been excellent albums. Some even think #controlsystem is damn near perfect. It’s getting rave reviews from just about everyone.
I hope nobody is sleeping on the new Killer Mike album. HHDX loved it, as did many other critics.
I haven’t even gotten the chance to check out El-P’s latest,
Which I’m pretty ashamed at. But it appears that everyone is blowing a load over it. It is donkey kicking every other hip hop album at MetaCritic so far. I’m looking forward to getting a second and checking it out.
And of course we can’t forget about KRIT. Whose shit has been so consistent since Krit Wuz Here. I’ve only gotten to hear Live From the Underground once, when it was streaming online.
This shit was wild:
Anthony Fantano had an orgasm over it. It had some interesting material on it, but in the end I didn’t think it was my cup of tea — but what did you guys think? So far, Death Grips is 0 for 2 on appealing to me personally.
For Haru/Dilla: Though it hasn’t been getting the fire ass reviews that these other albums have been receiving, it’s still a noteworthy release
Even more stuff that deserves a listen:
and released today:
41 tracks and just under 70 minutes total: Quakers. Some goddamn RIDICULOUS BEATS — You must check out “Fitta Happier”. This damn thing is a sleeper and it shouldn’t be.
Tecca Ninna released an EP that is yet again of high quality
Can’t forget Action Bronson’s shit
And there really is so much more shit. So much. Shit I know I’m forgetting. Mainstream stuff like Tyga, Rick Ross' Rich Forever tape, T.I. did Fuck da City Up. Gucci, 50, and David Banner all had mixtapes out. 50’s was actually not that bad! KRIT had 4Eva N a Day which was awesome. Odd Future’s collab tape. Cadence Weapon, Curren$y, Apollo Brown & O.C., Planet Asia… No joke. SO MUCH SHIT TO CHECK OUT.
How can anyone say that this first half of 2012 is bad? Rank ‘em, talk about what you’re looking forward to, make fun of me for not listing something, hate on everyone. Let’s just talk about 2012 hip hop
Control System made my brain tingle
I agree 100% 2012 has been very strong so far. A few good songs released this you not listed are Cartoon and Cereal, Mercy, I Don’t Like Remix, Exodus 23:1, etc plenty more I can’t think of.
Also don’t forget all the other stuff planned to be released this year:
Life Is Good by Nas
Food And Liquor II by Lupe
Compilation Mixtape by Kendrick and J Cole
Good Music Album
There’s also gonna be a lot of other albums to come up from under the radar so hopefully the next 6 months are just as good as the first half of 2012.
I haven’t heard a lot of these, but my favorite is definitely R.A.P. Music, followed by DJ Premier and Bumpy Knuckles in a distant second, and then El-P. I still need to check out Ab-Soul and Big KRIT, but neither of them are on vinyl, as far as I know. Also, the new J-Dilla comes out today.
My Top 5 albums so far for 2012 is
Live From the Undergound
Kicking And Screaming
OF Tape Vol 2. (Got a lot of hate but for some reason I kinda felt it, but if it wasn’t for Oldie, most likely wouldnt be in my top 5)
Loving the Killer Mike/El-P joint; listening to it right now. Loved Control System, Live From The Underground, 4eva N A Day, Blue Chips, When We Were Kings, The Blue Album & The People’s Rapper LP, Mickey MauSe, and I know I’m missing some. Haven’t heard Cure 4 Cancer, but I’ll check it out.
REALLY excited for Slaughterhouse, Kendrick & J Cole, GZA and Joey Bada$$. I’ll definitely check out the Dilla project. Jay-E, Lupe, and Kendrick’s next albums better be LEGENDARY, or I’ll be really pissed. I really really like XV, but he makes it seem like it’s gonna be different from his previous projects, and more “mainstream”, which I’m worried about, but that Andy Warhol song and the other songs he dropped were really good. Oh, and can’t forget about Nas. His shit’s almost always dope.
This is a good year for hip hop.
And here’s some other shit.
How could you guys forget what will easily be the GOAT album…
El-P and Aesop rock BOTH release their first album in 5 years
2012 is my fucking year man
also a dope mixtape, thanks to RTJ2 da god for showing me this. .
im kinda hook on these right now for 2012 as well the ones you guys threw as well
2012: Year of Strange baby!
So far Strange Music released Tech N9ne’s EP “Klusterfuk”, Prozak’s second album on the label, ¡MAYDAY!’s “Take Me To Your Leader”, “Paranormal”, Krizz Kaliko’s best album yet, Big Scoobs first mixtape in the “Dope Talk” series, “Kickin' & Screamin'”, and today Stevie Stone’s first album on Strange, “Rollin' Stone”. Also, later this year, Tech N9ne’s K.A.B.O.S.H. (group consisting of Tech, Krizz Kaliko and live band Dirt Wormz), his regular studio album, and maybe even Scoob’s second Dope Talk mixtape or even his Collabos album will be released.
Anyway, Krizz Kaliko’s latest release “Kickin' & Screamin'” is definitely the best album of this year in my opinion.
I SIT AND WAIT
You forgot Matter Don’t Money by Ubiquitous and The Deevil by Godemis which was also dropped this year.
And for other releases, Brotha Lynch Hung is dropping Mannibalector and Holloween this year.
Tech N9ne also stated that he’ll drop another solo album at the last quarter of the year, saying he wanted to collaborate with Eminem and Rick Ross.
