Is Tyler Perry funny at all?

..this is a serious question. Because I don’t know how he stays relevant and makes as much money as he does sometimes. I am personally not a fan, but I am white. However, all my black friends at college LOL so hard. Please respond with your opinion on the man’s humor and maybe even your race to help me understand such a mind-bending dilemma.

I think he’s funny but potentially harmful to black culture. His movies don’t exactly portray black people in the greatest light.

He’s funny but does kind of make us look bad in a stereotypical way but I think it is funny.

I don’t think his movies are funny really, they’re all repetitive. Madea was funny the first time but after the 6th movie it started to get annoying as hell.

NOO! I hate his movies and that TV show. The acting is awful. They try to get dramatic out of no where then they try to be funny WHICH THEY AREN’T. I think only black girls like his work. Im black and my mom and sister LOL like a motherfucker when they watch his films. And I’m pretty sure my female black friends enjoy him as well. I don’t know any males that like him. I mean, who would? He dresses like an old bitch. Taking the form of a stereotypical bitter black lady while preaching about…okay I don’t really know what he tries to convey in his movies. I remember seeing a family reunion and this chick was abused and there was a fire idk man.

I hate Tyler Perry movies. Like WillSC said, Madea was kinda funny the first time. But it got stupid real quick after every Madea’s storyline is Madea yelling and beating people up.

Nah, there’s only a few quotables here and there, but otherwise his stuff isn’t that great

It’s decent imo. I watched one of the movies and the tv show. Not great, but okay.

Honestly I legit Hate most of his work, I just don’t understand the love he gets.

He is not funny he tries too hard ripping off Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence

Black folk go to the movies like a motherfucker…its quite simple actually.

He fucking blows. Guys like Spike Lee and John Singleton made African American cultured/based movies that are critically acclaimed by all audiences. This douchebag Tyler Perry shits on every aspect of that, he is not one bit funny.

A sidenote to this, the most annoying thing is when I’m at a movie theatre and one of his trailers comes on before the movie. The worst part is the obnoxious laughter from people who can’t wait to see it in 4 months and waste their $12.50. People (mainly the young demographic) need to watch some real comedians like Pryor, Chappelle, Bernie Mac, etc.

i’m white and i think it’s stupid. i’ve always wondered if black people actually thought he was funny. cause i see no humor whatsoever in his work

Oh yeah, he’s funny alright. He’s so funny that he moved to ATL and ERECTED his studio here to join the rest of the funny boys who dress like women, act like women, or just simply not interested in…women. This is the true answer to your question whether he’s funny or not. He’s the funniest Drag-Queen I’ve seen who figured out a way to get paid doing it.

Way too many fucking Madea movies.
It’s just not funny the first time, why would it be funny the next 10 times?

Tyler Perry is low brow comedy. “Who ate the last piece of chicken?"
Its nothing that will stand the test of time. Tyler appeals to mainly old Church folk and single Black women with kids. Ive notice most Black men under 40 dont really dig his movies even though they dont mind watching them with a shorty.

Also Spike Lee took a shot at Tyler’s movies. But Spike is having a hard time finding a financier for his projects nowadays. It wouldn’t hurt him to have a friend like Tyler in his corner.

I’m brown and never heard of him.

no he’s annoying

HAILLLLL NOOOOO, Swear everytime I watch house of payne I keep a straight face throughout out the whole show, and don’t get me started on meet the browns. And when will he stop making Madea movies? every now and then I see a commercial for a new Madea movie, which everybody forgets about. The only funny part about any of his shows or movies, is when they start too act serious, they try waaaaay to hard.

All in all, Tyler perry is not funny.

Does it look like Kramer thinks he’s funny?

lol its funny b/c mostly you see white faces in the audiences watchin and tha majority sayin: “haha this is so funny/iwish i had a Madea in my life!” and buying tha plays, movies, etc eating it all up. kind of like an outsude looking in “oh this is what being black is like” thing

…but thats in tha south and his deceased mom’s mansion is the next town over/ so it miggght just be a demographic thing, not race.

I dont think hes funny at all

Not funny at all. I wish he’d just make a movie where it was 100% serious. Then, maybe other audiences would take him as a legit movie-maker. Truthfully, he makes black people look completely retarded.

@manicrjs
“I think he’s funny but potentially harmful to black culture”
Didn’t they say the same exact think about The Chappelle Show? I’m not comparing the two, I mean dear god I’d feel a bit suicidal if I did but it feels like hes trying to do Chappelles type of comedy, aiming it at woman, and sucking horribly at it.

Like he is trying to take what he made and sell it when Dave backed away from the stoplight

…arent most black comedians are put at fault for harm to black culture?

and here it goes: why the people feel to compare to every fucking black comedy to Chappelles show? Dude, Tyler Perry had dvds of his plays comming out around chappelles show 1st season, if not before. So that means he had to write them before Chappelles show was aired. So how is he ripping off of Chappelle:Black man in Black old woman drag stereotypical comedy with christian overtones vs a black man who gives a taste of how he views today’s culture and media who is strongly against drag — yeah he is sooo like chappelle

Perry does have serious movies with serious roles: The Family that Preys wasnt half-bad
If you dont find him funny: ok, but you cant use that to base the entire black race off of it or ask a dumb ass question “why black people find this funny?”

Seems like this is mostly people who dont know what they’re talking about

Eh. He’s actually a pretty talented director and his writing is getting a lot better. I was watching Madea’s Big Happy Family one day and was surprised, it wasn’t flat-out terrible. Still predictable and kinda outlandish, still kinda stereotypical but not terrible. The minute he decides to get out of his niche, he will probably receive a lot of praise.

I don’t see the humor in his work at all

that new Madea movie was a disgrace –_–

I took a film class in college a couple years ago and the last project was to choose a director of your choice to write a 10 page essay on. We had to dissect the movies, explain how the director was using the art to portray his messages. Some chic picked Tyler Perry LOL. Not that it matters, but she was african american, the church type. It was funny to see sit there and watch the professor try to explain to her that Tyler Perry movies have no artistry in the way that someone like Danny Boyle’s films do. She never got it.

Hes pretty racist. Im black, and how he shows blacks is just *facepalm. Hes the reason I cant get me a white chick

I’m black, and I don’t like to like him, but I feel some type of weird instinctual reflex making me laugh and cry at his god-awful overly dramatic writing and forcing me to give him my money

^ hilarious

“have no artistry in the way that someone like Danny Boyle’s films do.”

Really, of all people, you chose Danny Boyle to write a 10 page essay on? Did it consist of Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours dissections with small references to 28 days later?

He keeps middle and old aged black ladies entertained, I personally don’t find his shit funny at all.

No Danny Boyle was already taken, and this was before 127 hours….Slum Dog Millionaire was already out though. I did mine on Kevin Smith with “Chasing Amy” and “Dogma”.

Why small references to 28 days later? That movie is amazing.

By the way Danny Boyle also made “Trainspotting”, watch it if you haven’t.

Kevin Smith was a good choice, at least you didn’t do something cliched like George Orson Welles or something. And idk, I just don’t see a long portion of the essay being around 28 days later, idk.

Should’ve done Ozu or Sofia Coppola, that would’ve been an easy A. lol.

If you got blunted, Madea would make you laugh your ass off.

But I hate how he tries to pull all that drama bullshit. I don’t wanna watch a movie about a black prostitute who’s pimp beats her because she was raped in college.
