Beats For Sale

A few months ago, I started selling beats… Idk what else to say…

Of course, I will still be dropping freebies and shit to listen to and beats for myself, so don’t go saying I sold out…

I’m also charging $4.99 for custom beats, but for the RG fam I wouldn’t mind working for free (but if you’re willing to pay me, ;) that’s also great!)

@OViea91 lol it’s a trick I learned from somebody: if you’re selling beats it would be nice to give potential buyers a full listen rather than just a short preview because they can still miss things. But because of the internet it’s very easy to pirate beats even if the seller doesn’t allow it. So to work around this, you simply spam you’re name all through it. That way if someone pirates it, you may not get your money, but you’ll still get free promotion.

If someone buys the beat, I’ll simply give them a link to the real version of the beat.

@LordGio And what happens when that person buys your beats and sells you beat over the internet?

You know, we (as producer) like to believe that our beats are the shit and that everyone is going to want to hop on them… when the truth is, even if they were free, that don’t mean people want ‘em like that.

Selling beats isn’t the best way to get your name out there.

It’s like being a new artist, never charge for your first mixtape, because you can’t get exposure because noone is willing to potentially waste 5-15 dollars on a potential Illmatic, potential Quasimoto album.

Jus' sayin'.

@JoeyTop5 That kind of thinking is exactly what’s so ass-backwards about hip hop. What other genre is there that is based around giving shit out for free? I get the concept – get your music out and available to as many people as possible- but there’s a difference between letting people stream a few songs and giving a whole project away for free. The problem isn’t that fans aren’t willing to pay for good music, the problem is that artists are too willing to do a bunch of work on a project and then give it away!

Speaking from my own experience I would say that about 90% of the music that people push off on me for free gets set in a pile that never gets listened to. WHY? because I have no investment in it, I have no reason to waste my time listening to them or the 1,000,000 others just like them. In general it tells you something about that artist… they probably didn’t spend very much on the production of the project (if they did they’re be trying to recoup their investment)

On the other hand, even if an artists only asks for $1-2 in exchange for a mixtape I’m ten times more likely to actually listen to it because 1. they were confident enough in their project that they felt it was worth selling and 2. I just spent $2 on it… I’m invested in it.
