Company flows funcrusher plus is seriously overlooked. (Back to The Forum)

i just listened to this album and i feel like it doesn’t get enough love. nobody on this site has even mentioned it

That’s not true…

Its a classic and has been overlooked by many but it has been mentioned before in discussions on the forums.
I do recoment this project to anyone and everyone

lotsof albums r overlooked here. no ones mentioned blazing arrow by blackalicious

Yeah that album is overlooked. So is Illmatic by Nas, I never hear anyone talk about it on here

I just listened to this today, too. I was in the mood to after hearing the new El-P.

This was a significant album for me. It came out when I was just out of high school, that summer. And it was the first CD I ever wanted that I couldn’t get at my local record shop.

I think 1997 is the start of a new epoch in hip-hop. Before, you have various eras that overlap a little, but you basically have a single narrative of hip-hop history. In 1997, you had what I call The Great Divide. On the mainstream, you have the “Shiny Suit Era.” But in contrast to this, you had the development of a new, more underground, underground. Company Flow and Funcrusher Plus spearheaded this.

My opinion of the album: It’s not a classic in terms of quality. But it has something intangible. It is an important album, probably the most important of ‘97, even though I think there were definitely better albums in 1997.

FOH. Hiero’s stuff never gets a mention. I made threads and none of em' got replies. Company Flow and EI-P gets mentions occasionally on the chat and forums. But not too many great records get slept on like this one.

This album is recognized for its art more than its content

^ Cover art that is

What is that even supposed to mean? Are you saying the only reason people bring up Funcrusher Plus is for the album art?

Yes, A lot of times that is the only reason this album is brought up.

I’m calling bullshit on that one. I don’t know who you’re talking to but this album is so much more than that. Sure, the album art work is nice but we’re talking about THE indie rap album, the one that started a whole genre, the first album released by Rawkus. It’s production is unlike anything I’ve heard come out pre'98. Maybe you saw it come up in a best album art thread or something but trust me, it’s not recognized for it’s album art more than it’s content.

In every best album art threat this comes up, and outside of that I don’t see it come up. I’m not trying to fucking argue with you about the album. I’m just saying that is the only time I see it come up. Fuck dude. You always try to start arguments, chill the fuck out. I’m just saying what I have seen, and when it has been mentioned, and rarely outside of the artwork do I see the album mentioned.

Well I keep seeing you saying stupid shit on this forum, so I figured I’d try to set it straight. It’s not like I’m mad or anything but it annoys me that you thought that would somehow add value to the conversation.

I was agreeing with teis, how is that “stupid shit” that you need to set straight? Also, it annoys me that you would try to give me background information when I wasn’t even arguing with someone. Me saying the fact that it is only mentioned for the art is agreeing with the fact that the album is overlooked.

Well because it’s not true, I mean every song on the album is on the site and some of them are almost 100% explained. That’s better than most underground albums from the 90’s. And you didn’t specify it as being on Rap Genius instead of in general. In general, most hip hop sites recognize it for its content more so than its cover art. This site’s on the young side though, so I suppose it’s to be expected.

Well, I was talking about Rap Genius, and I assumed everyone else was too.

^^ Girls, girls, you’re both pretty.
Now, can somebody please explain to me exactly what this album is? I don’t care whether or not it spearheaded the indie-rap movement, I just wanna know whether I should listen to it.

^Same, the cover art looks like a mix between Del the Funkee Homosapien’s cover arts and those from De La Soul, so my expectations are pretty high tbh

Yes you should listen to it

Thanks Kayak, I was waiting for someone to say that. It depends. If you like EL-P style hip hop, then you’ll probably like the album. I prefer Fantastic Damage and Cancer for Cure but it’s still a great album, at least in my opinion.

Can’t be overlooked if it’s a classic doe, just saying.
