Yeah I was going to say Childish Gambino as well. But I definitely think that Drake was the one who brought it to the mainstream level with his flow. They both perfected it. It’s one thing to do it, but you actually have to be good at it. The problem with some rappers nowadays is that they do it, but the lines aren’t that good. |

@Eon yea and my problem with “punchline” rappers is that they pause the beat too fucking much!(cough cough Meek Mill cough cough) |

Fabolous is fantastic at punchline rapping. Weezy circa 07 as well. Honestly I find Childish’s punchlines a little forced. He always comes off as working way too hard to make connections and be clever. The best punchlines, to me, are like those 3D images that you have to cross your eyes to see correctly. At first it just seems like a normal, literal line but then all of a sudden it clicks and you’re perspective on it shifts. CG seems to WANT me to have to look his stuff up, so that I can marvel at his cultural knowledge. |

@zenmeloncholy the fact that you feel CG wants you to look his stuff up is the whole point, I think. His lines are sometimes so complex and unorthodox that he’s making it a thing of his own. And I agree with you about Loso. He’s tooo cold when it comes to punchline rapping. And someone else I want to give an honorable mention to is XV. Although its not necessarily punchline rapping, he does it in a way where you would have to hear the whole line (especially near the end) to know what he’s saying, directly or indirectly. |

Overall, Big Daddy Kane’s punchlines always make me laugh. But Gambino is the best right now IMO. “I made the beat and murdered it, Casey Anthony” I don’t even like that song but when I heard that line I laughed so hard |

I guess I’m gonna get alot of thumbs down but I honestly don’t see how anyone cannot say Wayne without a doubt.his punchlines have definitely gotten formulaic bit the gig has practically cornered the market on clever. And of course the lasagna line. Cmon who the fuck would come up with that?? Ok take a deep breath guys and remember were just talking about music-part of the fun oak the different opinions. Shit I can take whatever u got,i just think its lame when someones treated liketheyre retarded for liking lil wayne.or whoever. Ok bring it on! Haha I love a good debate |
