Is The Rap Game Pretentious?

By:

According to Google, the meaning of Pretentious is “attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.” Huh? Let’s RapGenius translate that — Someone who is Pretentious is simply conceited and trying to seem more important than they truly are aka being something they’re not.

Although the rap game has had public displays of pretentiousness in the past, Kanye West brought the word to fruition after he pathetically crashed the stage during the 2009 MTV VMAs, took the microphone out of Taylor Swift’s hand and unforgettably said “Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you. Imma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!” I truly believe the only reason this happened is because Kanye was pissed about that haircut he was rockin' and all that liquor he was drinking like a classy gentleman straight from the bottle finally hit his blood stream.

(I seriously feel like I’m playing a Labyrinth maze game when I look at it)

This event brought his “Amazing” lyrics to life:
It’s amazing, I’m the reason
Everybody fired up this evening
I’m exhausted, barely breathing
Holding on to what I believe in

It didn’t go slightly as planned for Mr. Yeezy though. Everyone was indeed fired up. And although he was going to let her finish, he just had to hold on to what he believed in. There could have been no greater of an introduction for Pretentious. And for that, we thank you ‘Ye.

Thereafter, Kanye continued living pretentiously, and although his actions weren’t received kindly, for some odd reason others followed in his footsteps…

Mr. 25 sittin' on 25 mil.
I’m confused by this dude right here. I honestly don’t even think Drake knows who he is anymore. He should of stuck to doing the wheelchair Jimmy.
http://youtu.be/LG8dDJNBTWQ Drizzy, rather than let the industry compliment him or hear praise from his peers, would prefer to do the talking for them. His latest album Take Care was more of an audio version of Drake’s hopeless, friendless, artificially enhanced memoirs.
I think I killed everybody in the game last year, man
Fuck it, I was on though

The saddest part of it all is Drake trying to be this creepy, lonely guy looking for love, which he claims never works out for him. Someone in YMCMB should probably let him know that it’s not a good look. If he’s soooo original, then why does Take Care sound like a wack, rap influenced version of Usher’s 2004 album, Confessions? Actually, nevermind, Drizzy is apparently the one asking for someone else’s confessions.

Mr. Look At Me Now
Hasn’t Breezy been getting paper for some time now? Or is Chris just referring to the fact that in the music industry you can beat a woman and shortly after, “get paper” again like nothing happened.

The Pretentious Scale is reaching maximum levels with this one:
Man my house is so big
Take the escalator to the elevators
The elevator to the private jet
Then I jet, nigga, see you laterrr

Who else is on #TeamPretentious?
Weezy — Best rapper alive claims every chance he gets. Also claims (alongside Birdman) to be a lot wealthier than he is.
Diddy — Nothing I could say about him hasn’t already been said somewhere else.
50 Cent — He beefs with everyone, but he has nothing to show for it.
Who else should be on this list?
