We are extremely proud to bring you this episode of Outside the Lines With Rap Genius, which features an in-depth interview with Abiodun Oyewole of the seminal group The Last Poets

Often thought of as the grandfathers of rap, The Last Poets combined poetry, Black Power-inspired ideology, social consciousness, and drumbeats to create a unique hybrid that would exercise a huge influence on hip-hop. Their work has been sampled by artists as diverse as Biggie, NWA, Brand Nubian, and 2 Live Crew

In addition to his work with The Last Poets, Abiodun has also recorded solo and collaborative albums, written books of poetry and written and staged several plays

The interview below takes us through Abiodun’s whole life and career, from the origins of The Last Poets to his time in jail to his back-and-forth with Ntozake Shange to his current work in education. We are extremely proud to bring you this important oral history of one of our greatest living poets
