“We only said goodbye with words/I died a hundred times” — Amy Winehouse, Back to Black

Amy Winehouse was never one to keep her opinions to herself. “I remember Amy sent me the tracklist for Back to Black and I called her and said ‘There’s only ten songs on here??’” Island Records Co-President Darcus Beese annotates, “She said, ‘I’ve written the record, it’s 10 tracks, that’s what it is. Now fuck off.’”

Darcus, the man who originally found Amy and brought her to Island Records, recently took to Genius to annotate the late artist’s entire oeuvre. Throughout the process, Darcus shares some of his most treasured memories with Amy, including the night that Amy won 5 Grammy’s,  “That was something I will never, ever forget.” Darcus annotates, “Being there, and being involved it, and then seeing it happen…it was a proud moment. I remember saying to her afterwards, ‘Amy it’s amazing, you just won five Grammys!’ and she was like ‘Eh.’ And that was it. “

Read Darcus’ annotations to learn more about the first day he and Amy met, what it was like working with Mark Ronson, and why Amy initially wanted to call one of her songs “fuckery.”
