“Mayonnaise colored Benz, I push Miracle Whips” – Kanye West (ft. Jessica Rivera), Last Call

Just because Ratatat’s songs don’t contain lyrics doesn’t mean that they aren’t ripe for annotation. How else could we learn that their new song “Cream on Chrome” was inspired by rappers referring to cream-colored Mercedes-Benzes as a “Mayonnaise Benz”? Or that “Drift” is the duo’s only song written under the influence? In one of their annotations, Ratatat even admits that sometimes they aren’t entirely sure how their songs come together, “No one knows where this song came from…there’s a bass chord in there? When did that happen?”

Read Ratatat’s annotations to learn about how some “mild weed cookies” helped with the writing of “Drift” and which songs they think are for “cruising” and which are for “the club.”
