Describing a typical love-hate relationship. In the beginning he loves these traits, but by the end of the song he uses the word hate.

The Latin poet Catullus introduced the love–hate theme into Western culture with his famous lines:

I hate and yet love. You may wonder how I manage it. I don’t know, but feel it happen, and am in torment

The girl liked him because he was wearing the right clothes and fit into the same clique that she was a part of so he was cool. Cliques are very common in human society and exist at all age levels, though mostly thought of as an adolescent phenomenon. The media almost exclusively portrays teenage girls in cliques.

The main instinct a lot of the time is to masquerade and hide the truth at all times. Whereas in reality what happens in songs is laying bare the truth. So a lot of time it’s fighting that instinct, and the songs become almost confessional. They can also be quite condescending to myself, almost like I’m putting myself down.

A jib is a type of sail on sea faring vessels. Pirates could tell if a ship was an enemy or ally by the cut of the cloth.

Quick Bio

Yo I’m Ben. Currently living in Minneapolis and studying at the University of Minnesota. Switched my major to Studies in Cinema and Media Culture after two years studying Architecture. I enjoy writing, drawing, watching films (60’s French New Wave especially), playing guitar, perusing my local record store. Basically I just really like art.

Been on the RG grind since Fall of ‘11 (I think, somewhere around there). Spend most of my time on the Rock Genius side of things now but I generally enjoy music from all genres (good music is good music yeah?).

Feel free to contact with questions/concerns/interesting discussion whenever. I usually get on at least once a day

Jeremy Messersmith is a singer-songwriter based in Minneapolis. His forthcoming album, Heart Murmurs is set to be released on Glassnote Records.

He is as very hipster looking fellow as are many residents of the Minneapolis area. Minnesota was named the ‘Most Hipster State in the U.S.’ last year.

The Triple Rock Social Club is a few blocks off the University of Minnesota’s West Bank campus and local acts frequently play there. It’s not a large venue by any means but it holds a place in the heart of many Minneapolis residents.

There is a big difference between a real smile and one that’s forced. Smiling isn’t just a movement of facial features, it requires emotion (plus it’s good for you).

With a half smile

His mind was preoccupied trying to think of something to say to her if he ever got the chance the talk to her. Or maybe he was thinking of song lyrics to sing to her which ended up becoming this song.

What was meant as a beautifully written poem pleading for the heart of a girl reads as a desperate attempt at a pull from a drunk boy.

This theme continues to haunt Alex even on a more recent release, “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?”.
