“Cloak and dagger” is an English saying describing something covered with intrigue or mystery. The original image is that of a spy or an assassin using a cloak to confuse an enemy, making them able to kill someone with their dagger. She’s using a slighty altered version of the image, where the cloak is there, i.e. the aforementioned style og swagger, but when it comes down to it, they don’t have the dagger, the thing they need to complete their mission (being a rapper or an assassin), making their disguise nothing more than a facade.

A jab at rappers that focus 100% on swag and style and completely ignore lyrics and message. Basically, they front like they have so much skill and style, but don’t actually deliver anything to prove their skills as writers.

Dorothy Parker:

April O'Neal

Dorothy Parker was an American poet and satirist, know for her fight for civil rights, as well as her place as a respected female writer in a male-dominated world. April O'Neal is a friend and assistent of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the cartoon series from the ‘80s and '90s. Basically, she’s saying that she’s half Parker, a female writer in a masculine genre fighting for what she believes in, and half the female sidekick to a group of rad dudes (DOOMTREE!)

This track is about having a hard time finding a proper girl to love and have a relationship with. The first four lines are meant to look like a stereotypical profile text on any match making site, starting off with describing his looks, then his interests, which he points out are lies (probably to make him more interesting), and then finally that he has become jaded through his past experiences with women.

Hmm mon ikke det er “The world is yours” fra Scarface han hentyder til?

"If you don't aim for the center its a waste of the art" (Dessa – Fighting Fish) | accepted

It says “waste of the art” in the booklet for the album. Basically, the song is about lacking goals, about it being okay to dream big. She’s saying that if you don’t aim to make it with your music, to get it out there, it is a waste of the art, i.e. any artist should want to get their work out to the masses to be heard. It is fairly cryptic, but following the arrow-metaphor, it makes sense

"With a big black belly / If it get to shaking like jelly ..." (El-P – Tougher Colder Killer) | accepted

I actually understood the shaking of the belly as a sign of recoil from firing the gun (probably a machine gun)? Atleast that’s the image that popped up in my head.

Pretty sure he says “Out in Glasgow, Switzerland” instead of “glass go whistlin'” in line 4. I do realise that’s a pretty dumb line, Glasgow being in Scotland and all, but it makes sense in the context, i.e. “Mr. International” etc.

"I keep it 300, like the Romans" (Kanye West – Black Skinhead) | rejected

Or, you know, it was just a brain fart, like Talib Kweli playing in “Glasgow, Switzerland”

“Ingenmandsland” burde efter min mening ændres til “Ingemanns land”, for større klarhed omkring referencen. Se min forklaring for uddybning :)
