Wednesday morning has become Friday night thanks to Charli XCX. The U.K. electro-pop auteur returns today with “Club classics” and “B2b,” a pair of tracks from her forthcoming album BRAT, and they’re both full-on dance jams that continue the hedonistic vibes of the project’s lead single, “Von dutch.”
Both songs make heavy use of lyrical repetition, which suits the relentless rhythmic thudding, and “Club classics” is mostly about the sweaty thrills of hitting the town.
When I go to the club (Right now, right now)
I wanna hear those club classics (Right now, right now)
Club classics (Right now, right now)
But Charli is also doing some legacy building. When she goes out, she expects to hear her own records, as well as ones produced by her frequent collaborators A. G. Cook, George Daniel (her fiancé), SOPHIE (RIP), and Hudson Mohawke.
Yeah, I wanna dance to me (Right now, right now)
I wanna dance to A. G. (Right now, right now)
I wanna dance with George (Right now, right now)
I wanna dance to SOPHIE (Right now, right now)
I wanna dance to HudMo (Right now, right now)
Whereas “Club classics” relies on flippant, chanted vocals, “B2b” boasts a dark and hypnotic melody that pairs nicely with the lyric. Charli feels herself spiraling back into a bad relationship, and she’s fighting to escape the gravitational pull.
Back to, back to, back to, back to, back to you
I don’t wanna fall right back to us
Maybe you should run right back to her
I don’t wanna go back, back to
On the song’s lone verse, marked by sinister swells of distorted synth, Charli reflects on how far she’s come. She’s been through too much to backslide into this bullshit.
Took a long time
Breaking myself down
Building myself up
Repeating it
Along with these songs, Charli released the tracklist for BRAT, which arrives June 7. Check it out below.
