Nicki Minaj must really, really like LL Cool J’s “Doin’ It.”
On Thanksgiving (Nov. 26), Fabolous dropped his retro-meets-modern Summertime Shootout mixtape, which includes “Doin’ It Well,” an update of LL’s aforementioned 1995 classic song. The revamp features Trey Songz and Nicki Minaj—but it’s not the latter’s first time flipping that red-light-playlist staple.
Back when she was still calling herself Nicki Lewinsky, Minaj tackled the “Doin’ It” instrumental on her 2008 mixtape Sucka Free. It was just a short freestyle intro’d by a Jadakiss cosign ( he represents Yonkers—not Queens or Brooklyn—for the record).
On the latest stab at “Doin’ It,” Fab and Nicki deftly channel LL and LeShaun (the female guest on the original), especially in the song’s closing verse where they jack the rhyme flow entirely. There’s some innovation, though.

While Fabolous has been trapped in the ’90s since 2014’s The Young OG Project, Nicki’s connection to Uncle L should also come as no surprise. Twenty years ago, LL was a reigning New York City rap god—he shot portions of the “Doin’ It” video in Queens’ Rochdale Village housing complex, minutes from both his and Nicki’s childhood stomping grounds.
Some more Cool J classics that Nicki could do well? We’d vote “Around The Way Girl,” “I Shot Ya,” “Big Ole Butt,” and none other than “Pink Cookies In a Plastic Bag.”
